Battle of the bands invades UNBC By Aaron Mahoney The brain child of Jackie Eaton and April Williams rocked the winter garden January 5. But only after the World Junior Hockey Championships between Canada and Russian finished in the winter garden. Sponsored by the Max and NUGSS, _ four bands entertained around 200 students playing a mix of music from rock & roll to heavy metal. The bands were playing for the right to be the lead band in next semester's Northern Backyard Barbecue. Judges for the night were chosen from local music gurus. Each band was to play three songs with a 15 minute inter- lude. Godless started off the night followed by Kings Incorporated. Kings incorporated's song "In the morning" got the crowd rocking. Rutabaga Chillin’s fol- lowed and their song "Midnight hour" found a connection with the stu- dents. White Knuckle Ride brought their dis- tinctly 80's heavy metal sound to the stage. The judges reviewed all the bands and in a close decision, gave Kings Incorporated second place while top honours went White Knuckle Ride. "The battle of the bands was an-idea that has been kicking around for a while and we just needed the time to put the whole thing togeth- er," said Jackie Eaton, NUGSS Director for Social & Promotions, "Its a lot of work to get the show together but we want to turn this into an annual event." Students leaving the Battle of the Bands expressed appreciation for the music and the event. Rutabaga Chillin's Alice Lyons contributed to a strong showing in the Battle of the Bands.
