March 9, 1999 SPORT TS Over The Edge Page 9 My Basketball Season of 1998/99 with UNBC Timberwolves Women's Team By Bernard Leszczynski, Assistant Women's Basketball Coach It was the beginning of September 1998 when | came to meet the head coach of UNBC's Women's Basketball team, Loralyn Murdoch, in her office. | asked her if she would be interest- ed in having me work with her as the Assistant Coach, she said "yes". Next time we met was at the practice at Kelly Road Secondary School (KRSS) gymnasium. Fourteen players arrived for the first few practices. We were happy to have such a turnout. For me it was just learning about their technical, physical, and tactical skills. | also needed to find out how the Head Coach lead the practices and what her expectations of me would be. | found that Loralyn Murdoch is_ energetic and dedicated with her work as Coach. | know that together we can reach our coaching goals. We then met to discuss the upcoming basketball season, to set the goals, and to plan practices. After this we headed to KRSS with optimism but we were met with disappointment as four players resigned. In spite of this situation the rest of the players worked very hard, and did their best to prepare for the first games. They were set to play in Grand Prairie. The trip to Northern Alberta was good, we lost one game and won the second. The next practices were aimed at preparing for tournaments in Vancouver and _ in Edmonton. Just before leaving for the road trip | was dismayed to find that the budget did not allow me to go on the trip with the team. | had to wait for results and team performance reports... The last game against Langara College was scheduled for Feb 13. The team worked very hard to prepare for the difficult game. The prac- tices were the best prac- tices we had during the entire season.
