Over The Edge Page 2 NUGSS| Apr 1 2002 Finance Report Summary The Northern Undergradu- -ate Student Society is an organization, which provides resources and services for the undergraduate students of UNBC. NUGSS provides infor- mation to the undergraduate student population about numerous school activities, clubs, and resources avail- able. NUGSS is a resource for the students to pursue, in an attempt to help them with the day-to-day challenges of their academic careers. NUGSS, with an elected board of direc- tors, tries to serve and repre- sent the student population. The following is a summary of key points from the report: eNUGSS provides a fax ser- vice, free local telephone calls, lockers for rent, ping-pong paddles, and the ability to book rooms and tables. eNUGSS generates rev- enue through a number of ways. All students pay an undergraduate student fee of thirty dollars that goes to fund- ing the operations of NUGSS and the program which it pro- vides to help students in their day-to-day lives. These fees account for approximately $170,000. Lockers and corpo- rate donation account for $15,000. elIn order to increase the amount of services offered to students, NUGSS is working on the construction of a Student Union Building (SUB). NUGSS’s goals were to receive land, save money, and secure a loan for the SUB. *NUGSS holds two pro- grams to start the year, name- ly the Backyard Barbecue, a concert, and Shinerama, a fund-raising event to raise awareness of cystic fibrosis. eApril Williams, General Manager, continues to be a valuable asset. eNUGSS is in overall good financial position, having no debt or liabilities, and close to $750,000 in capital to finance the SUB. eThe flat rate of thirty dol- lars per student per semester will be increased to $32 per student effective September 2002. eNUGSS wishes to increase aware and use of its website, www.nugss.com. eA possible initiative to increase awareness would be to have representatives speak at lectures or sit in tables in the agora. eAnother initiative would be to make the website more effective, both as a medium of information and as a revenue generating item. eOr more annual events hosted by NUGSS in addition to the Battle of the Bands, Frostbite, and UNBC day. eNUGSS is conducting a food-drive campaign as an additional service to students. *Both the staff (including the administrative assistant and the speaker of the board) and board of directors at NUGSS are excellent informa- tion resources for addressing student concerns.
