66 tion of clay deposit depends also on the amount of overburden that has to be removed before excavating can commence; the facilities for washing; whether the clay be residual; the size of the deposit—10,000 cubic yards is © probably a minimum—and above all on the cost of transportation to the nearest market. Before expenses are incurred in developing a prospective clay deposit it should be thoroughly sampled. The samples should be forwarded to the Mines Branch, Department of Mines, Ottawa, for testing. If two or more large portions of the deposit apparently vary in character they should be sampled separately.
