Way to Grow, UNBC! by Manpreet Sidhu | | UNBC is bucking a nationwide trend this year in regards the number of student - applications. The number of applications has risen this year by 12%. This is the first year UNBC could rely on a large returning student population. The number of students applying to Ontario universities is in its sharpest decline in years. Across Ontario, there has been a 5.1% drop in the number of applicants for Ist year full time students in July from last year. Carleton has ' received the largest drop by 16%. Increased admission requirements, the steady rise of tuition and lack of well-paying summer jobs are being blamed for the small numbers. Across the country, at UNBC, preliminary figures show the total number of students has risen 65% from 1500 to somewhere between 2200 and 2300 students as UNBC continues to grow and expand. by Manpreet Sidhu UNBC’s second graduating class took to the stage earlier this year. This was the first time this ceremony was conducted at the Prince George campus. Ten students received degrees in their respective fields with UNBC Chancellor Iona Campagnolo and founding President Geoffrey Weller presiding. Honorary Doctor of Law degrees were presented to longtime resident and writer Bridget Moran, Margaret Ormsby and Bertram McKav OOS. The Student Newspaper of the for their accomplishments. Bachelor’s degrees were awarded to Kelly Breen (English), Meredith Bogle (General), Lesley McVey (General), Michael Readman (General), Beverly Freathy (History), Claudette Gouger (History), Rose Rutledge (History), Bob Cochrane (Psychology), Kevin Prouse (Psychology) and Domingos Mitch Verde (Psychology). Readman was the first student to graduate without ever setting foor on the Prince George campus. He cojmpleted his studies in Dawson Creek.
