Over the Edge - November 16 a&e 19 MAN WITHOUT A CELL PHONE An Israeli Smart Comedy ANDREW J SOLTIS CONTRIBUTOR “Man without a cell phone” is a lighthearted Israeli film that takes place in a Palestinian village. It was directed by Sameh Zoabi and it is his first feature film. “Man without a cell phone” is about a Muslim farmer ( Salem) who gets a cell phone tower put up near his crops and then per- sonally makes it his on-going mission to have the tower removed. Although he dislikes the tower, Salem’ son (Jaw- dat) and Salem’s wife use their cell phones often. When Salem becomes certain that people are becoming ill from the tower, he starts a quest to have it removed. Jawdat is a romantic, who spends his time throughout the movie making attempts to seduce Christian, Jewish and Muslim women. It is not until his father goes on a mission to have the cell phone tower removed that Jawdat focus’s his mind on something other than chasing women. Salem’s character is a 60 year-old man who is resistant to change and has many irrational anxieties concerning cell phones including “dangerous radiation”. His atti- tude towards cell phones and his dread toward the tower in comparison to that of his wife and 20 year-olds who would use their cell phones non-challantly around him, was quite comical. There are a lot of moral messages throughout the film that are delivered in a lighthearted way so it is definitely a film for the intellect, but is also funny. “Man without a cell phone” is smart comedy, so if that is your type of movie genre — enjoy!
