Page Eighteen and garrets they had poked and pried, measuring and tapping walls, sound- ing every inch of the building for a secret hiding place—and found nothing. They turned to the garden, and for days the squad dug in the slippery clay. A week or more went by; blustery gusts of march wind gave way to intermitten showers of April rain, and the ground around the house was all dug up. The grounds of the farm house were separated from the farmyard by a circular, moat-like ditch, and when all the land inside the ditch had been explored, without result, the tired diggers eyed Bower for his next move. Now some men would have been satisfied with the search—they would have given up what seemed to be a will o’ the wisp. Played a Hunch But not Bower. He played his hunches to the finish. And after all it was only a hunch. He had no proof that a murder had been committed or a body buried on the farm premises. But Bower knew that somehow, somewhere, it must be there. He knew, too, as he watched the weary diggers day after day, tight lipped and grim, that he was facing a major challenge in his career. His Chief at Scotland Yard, who knew his methods, readily admitted Bower's genius for overcoming tough prob- lems. But after all, four weeks is a long time to search a house. Even the newsmen who dropped in from time to time at Moat Farm began to feel that for once Scotland Yard was off the beam. But to Bower, trained in the Yard’s tenacity, there was no question of failure. The problem was merely taking a little longer than he anti- cipated. When Sgt. Scott reported that nothing was hidden in the grounds, Bower paced slowly up and down for a second, sucking his pipe, deep in thought. “Then it’s in the moat!” he snapped decisively. He ordered the moat drained. The weary, muddy squad dug a ditch to a nearby pasture, and slowly the water drained away revealing a_ broad, slimy, shallow channel. And nothing else. That is, nothing but mud and weeds, and a few rusty cans. Some of the men armed themselves with long poles and probed the mud, without result. Then Bower heard somewhere that a duck pond in the farmyard had once been connected to the moat by a deep ditch, which had been filled in a few years before. He located a villager who helped fill in the ditch, and who pointed out where it had run.
