a train to Smithers. He walked the track
to a point about seven miles west of Endako,
accompanied by a couple of friends. While
eating their lunch on the side of the right-
of-way, Popovich was seen walking toward
them from the west. Wuska asked him what
he was coming from Priestley for. Popovich
said, “Trains no go this week.” He was
asked about Mike Turkuola, with whom he
was supposed to be going to the old country,
but said he hadn’t seen him.

SusPICIONS AROUSED

Vuska seemed to have had some sus-
picions. He knew that there had been
three trains that week and said that Popo-
vich looked scared and nervous. He also
seems to have come to a very rapid con-
clusion because Vuska said to his compan-
ions, “You bet your life you never see Mike
Turkuola again.”

Vuska carried on until he reached
Smithers and there he went to the rooming
house of Steve Gelich’s. Steve was also

a friend of the dead man.and he told Vuska
that he had received a letter from Mike
, Turkuola that he was coming, but that Mike
had never arrived.
Investigation then led to the movements
and financial condition of Popovich. It

was discovered that on the 2nd and 3rd
of July he was at Prince George and stayed
at a place run by Pete Pavich. He had asked
for a loan, got into a small poker game and
lost a couple of dollars. He had earned
$3.00 the next day and then left Prince
George.

The police found that he arrived in Prince
George again on the 21st of July and again
saw Pete Pavich, telling him that he had
been up at Fort Fraser. He seemed to be
pretty well fixed and, when Pete asked him
if he made the money, he said, “You bet
I make money,” pulled out a pocketbook
with a large amount of money in it and
said, “I grabbed somebody up there.”
