March 24, 1998 SOUNDSCAPE Zuckerbaby and Sandbox “Celestial Skies Above” by Jennifer Albus and Renate Schmid : The Zuckerbaby and Sandbox concert on March 16th, at the Munk, was energetic and an event worth seeing. Bill Bowers, the event's. promoter, brought these bands to Prince George for a good time and he accom- plished his goal with style. Doors to the concert opened at 8pm. and we arrived with many other enthusiastic and anxious fans. The headlining band, Zuckerbaby, provided a talented and energetic performance. Andrew Eichhorn, singer and songwriter, held the audience in the palm of his hand. His per- formance was enhanced by the impressive guitar work of Reed Shimozowa (and songwriter), bassist Wayne Stadler and drummer Brian Doss. On the whole, the band exuded a posi- tive energy that was felt throughout the audience. This overwhelming energy not only existed in their music, but it reflected Eichhorn’s own view on how to “love it (music) from your heart.” When interviewed the band described their music as “Pop, played by a rock an roll band.” The members of this group, that has only been together for two and a half years, are truly down to earth, nice guys, whose striking per- sonalities boldly come across, not only in their music, but in’ their stage presence. The evening was opened by an act equally as impressive. The Halifax ‘based band Sandbox, four weeks in on a seven-week tour; shone so bright that the blue stage lights had to be turned down! This band was out promoting their second album, and their pol- ished performance caught the ear of even those who had never heard their name. Vocalist Paul, “you have bagels?” Murray gave an exu- berant performance that brought the audience closer to their music. Mike “make a scrunchie face” Smith, Jason Archibald, Scott, “Let’s see some ID” MacFaralne, and Troy Schanks put together a talented and powerful show. This group of high school /hockey buddies (except Scott) have been together for four years and never expected their present fame. Paul with his History degree and Mike with his English degree, are turning hard work into an adventure full of new people and new experi- ences. Collaboratively . they write their music as personal expression and are flattered by the response they’ve received. Their friendship and laid-back demeanors is the foundation of their success. Both bands have huge poten- ‘tial to go far in the music world. . Their performances are only half their talent, in that the depth of their music truly captures and holds the listener. We felt the concert was of exceptional qual- ity, and we would like to thank both bands for taking the time to speak with us. We were not only impressed with their music but also their friendly personali- ties. We encourage all of you, whoever you are, to take the time to check these albums out!
