Courier Rassiar “The View From Ottawa Jim Fulton, M.P. ACTION ON ENVIRONMENT PAYS As I read through the incom— ing mail from across the Nor th— west; one theme comes thraugh ahead of all others: "Environ- ment”. No matter what walk of life, age or community — everyone seems to realize that the natural world around us is at (risk. Canadians have served notice on politicians at every level that our enviranment, our future, 15 the number one priority. I recall the massive support to preserve South Moresby and the cryganized opposition. I recall the massive support to preserve Temaqami Cin northern Ontaria) and the organized appositian. One of thase arrested at Temagami was Bab Rae. He is now the Pre- mier of Ontaric. Voters resent being told by biq companies that everything is fine with our for ests and that they can cut far- ever without replanting. At the federal level the Tories are about toa amnounce the Opposition Leader Mike Harcourt ’ are Timber harvest levels higher than ever before in this province. Yet in the past year alone, 4500 jobs have gone out the windew in forest communities across H.C. Why ? Because the Vander Zalm Sacred government has failed tc ensure that forest campanies who get cutting rights to sour trees alsa quarantee jabs far British Columbians. Eighteen months aga, when the forestry giants vere at peak production levels and were chalk— ing up record profits, the Sac reds secretly broke the link be- tween timber access and jabs. They said to the forest companies in virtually all of the 1890 for- est licences in place in B.C.: don’t worry about jobs in return for timber. You can clase or cut 3ack operations as you want. Every company halding long— term cutting rights can now walk away from their responsibility ta forest workers, their communi— ties, and to Gur province. The cozy deal between the current government and forest companies ras allowed Ainsworth Lumber to valk away from its responsibility 760 6Uthe: «town of Lillooet, taking vith it 175 jobs. New Demacrats took oan forest ainister Claude Richmond in the Legislature over the Secred thange in policy. He said: "My -ecord speaks for itself.” For mnte, > >> > PAPA sr se marr : | | : ) PS TU ETT TT TE LT ——S —E Blue Valley | Figure Skating \' We would like to thank some very special people who helped ta make our 1990 Oktoberfest a suc— cess.
