Prince Rupert market will not exceed 25 cents per ton, the freight by steamship direct from Massett Inlet to Puget Sound and California points will average approx- imately $1.25 per ton. High Quality of Graham Island Coal > The Graham Island coal is pronounced by Dr. R. W. Ells, of the Geological Survey of Canada, to be of the semi-anthracite variety, whereas the lower seam contains anthracite of a high order, and the two upper seams resem- bles in quality and compares favorably with the famous Pocahontas coal of West Virginia. The Graham Island coal of the semi-anthracite quality makes the best coke in the country, and for steam and domestic fuel it is unex- celled. The coal is clean and free from slate and clinkers and as far as the assays show the coal is free from sulphur. The coal lies in blanket form and the seams range in thickness from seven to twelve feet clear coal, although there is one seam measuring 1714 feet with a thin parting of a sandstone layer between; said sandstone layer meas- ures from six inches to one foot in thickness, and on one side of the sandstone parting is 12 feet 4 inches clear coal of a high class, and four feet clear coal on the other side.
