What we are going to tell you about is the Outdoor Education camp we have just had at Chain Lakés on June 5th to June 10th. ‘ The grade 6/7 class has been earn- ing money for this camp from the begin- ning of the year.. The total amount of money we have earned is about $1800.00. This camp wasn't just a whole week out of school...it was to learn about the the Outdoors. The whole class went plus 6 leaders to heip us. In the next paragraphs there are going to be some of our Outdoor classes. Everybody learned outdoor cooking. If you burned your food--tough luck. The whole class learned to cook a whole meal all together. wee There were canoe lessons for every- body. The next day we had a canoe portage that lasted about 3 hours...we all enjoyed it. Mr. Wright and Mr. Madson came and spent their time to teach us ori- enteering. We had a course to go through and some people got lost. m We had a nature hike that lasted als also about three hours (and believe us, was it ever hot). We learned to know when a bear or some animal is near or if its been around. aT Tracking was fun. Everybody There were moose, deer, bear, horse and wolf tracks. We made plaster of Paris casts of the-tracks we found and each person had their own sample. Mrs. Olson taught half the class how to pack canoes so they would be waterproof. Everybody had to go and get a personal item, put it into the canoe, then the canoe was tipped to test how waterproof - it was. Luckily, no one had wet stuff because the canoe was packed properly. ' Mr. Olson brought the other half of the ciass to the older shelter which they built last year. The Shelter was built without ropes or nails. Mr. Burrows came to the camp and taught us First Aid. He taught us the Basic steps to save a person from drowning, broken limbs and bleeding. Mrs. Olson taught how to gut, wash, fillet and to cook and bake fish on an open fire. We also learned how to scale a fish. Each evening a group of stu- dents had to entertain the rest by a campfire presentation. After the presentations we played a few games, and ended each evening with hot chocolate and cookies. We oti idininintntintintniniok our Picnic On June 9, 1978 our class went for a picnic. We had fun! We sang songs, and we had stories and games. We left at 9 a'clock in the morning. It was rain- ing in the morning but after it began. to be sunny. Then in the afternoon we went for-a walk. After that we had a boat ride and a ride on the motorcycle. Then we saw packhorses. Soon it was time to go su we went home. . Mary Molan, Grade 2 / On Thursday night, June 1, the two drama classes at Cassiar School put on their end of year productions. As all that had been done previously by these groups was a Studio Night before Christmas, to which only parents of the students were in- vited, no one knew just what to expect from these new plays. Any- rone trying to visit the school library during one of the Drama 8 rehearsals heard a few intriguing lines but were hastily rushed out. The Rec Centre stage slowly filled up with scenery, furniture and props until it was transformed into a modern suburban living-room one hour and an 3)ld-fashioned spooky, bedroom the next. But on Thursday night the curtains finelly parted for the lively, be- lieveable and viiried performances of the students on what turned out to be an enjoyable evening for all who attended. The Grade 6/7 class, under the direction of Mrs. Eileen Wojick, started the night off with a present- ation that had been slated for Christ mas but, for some shelved until now. It is a worthwhile experience to be reminded of such things as brother- hood, giving, self-knowledge and love - messages that often go un- noticed during the cluttered Christ- mas period. The hard work and effort of the } Drama 8 class during their rehearsals 44 proved beneficial when their finished reason, had been Lucky for,us. “Michelle Clements, Barb Guderjahn and Sylvia Genn in "Weird is the Night" A scene from "To Touch Your Heart" performed by the grade 6/7 class, Prama Classes Prove Their Werth _ Sylvia Genn, Barb Guder jahn and Shelby Mann-in "Weird is the Night" product brought laughter ard suspense to the extremely appreciative audience. The witty, sharp and realistic per- formances of the two Bostonian sis- ters, Sylvia Genn and Barbara Guder- Jahn, carried the play along and — towards its climax with little short of professionalism. We could believe their odd situation and felt fright- . ened right along with them, But the spooky Miss Valentine, a difficult role, was strongly portrayed by Michelle Clements with just the right amount of eccentricity, dominance and underlying innocence. Note must &lso be made of Shelby Mann, in a supporting role, and Laurie Prosser who helped to gather together the props and materials which made the set so real. The second play, put on by the Drama 9/10 class, lacked the pace and slickness of Weird is the Night, but was roundly received by the audience as the hilarious, infuriatingly mixed up comedy that it is. There was, per- haps, less confidence in the perform- ers, with the exception of Kathy Johnston and Les Kurian, but with some good comic delivery and charact- erization on the part of all the students, the curtain came down on a vastly amusing situation: Tangled Web! Both Classes proved their worth in these plays, and proved to us that it really is worth it to go out to an evening of drama.
