Page 10 October 1984 Cassiar Courier Parents Advisory Council The Parents Advisory Council will send a “strongly-worded letter of discontent” to the Stikine School Board regarding the lack of playground facilities at Snowridge Elementary School. The playground was. contracted to be finished this summer and the Council wants to know why the work was not completed. Teacher representative Shirley Vickery told. the Council, ““The children are playing in the parking lot. We need that playground now.” Snowridge Principal David John called the area a ‘sea of mud”’. Mr. John said the work to level the school yard was started in July. However, the work was never completed this summer. Now the wet ground conditions have made it impossible for the contractor to bring his heavy equipment onto the school yard. Mr. John said the playground should be finished this fall, weather permitting. The report card system at Snowridge will be different this year. The first report to parents will be issued October 12th and it will inform parents how their child is adjusting to his or her new class. There will be no grades on the first report. The following report cards will have grades and will be issued Dec. 7, 1984, March 22, 1985, and June 27, 1985. Mr. John said this is more in tune with the way the elementary school year is divided: from the beginning of the year until Christmas, Christmas to Easter and Easter until the end of the school year. Representatives from the Canadian Armed Forces visited the Secondary School in Sept- ember. Teacher rep Merv Prier said he was very impressed: with the presentation. He said the two Armed Forces personnel outlined the courses the students need to take in order to fulfill the entry requirements of the Forces. He said this was especially helpful to the Grade 10 students who can made the right course selections now. The Cassiar student enrollment is down from last year. There are 188 students at Snowridge compared to 193 last June. At the Secondary School there are 98 students compared to 105 last June. The Parents Advisory Council continues to express concern over the safety of the C.C.C. bus which is occasionally used to transport stu- dents on field trips. . In discussions with Gary Perriard Keith Lanphear was assured the bus is inspected after every use. However, the Council has decided to ask the School Board to. ensure that the bus used by students meets provincial safety inspec- tion requirements. The next meeting of the Parents Advisory Council will be October 10th at 7:30 p.m. at the Cassiar Secondary School Library. HOURS <>
