Page Thirty-six Burgess Magrath, Medical Examiner for Suffolk County. Telling her many stories of violent crime, often unsolved through ignorance of those charged with their detection and in- vestigation, the doctor made a per- manent impression upon her. His own excellent work in the patho- logical field stirred her imagination, and later, when a wealthy relative left her a quarter of a million dol- lars, she sought Dr. Magrath’s coun- sel on how best to use the legacy to advance scientific crime detection and the protection of her fellow man. Dr. Magrath’s advice was simple and to the point. Why not endow a new department at Harvard Medical School to be called ‘“The Department of Legal Medicine’? Acting on the suggestion, Mrs. Lee furnished the funds to open this new Department, and ever since has taken a very active interest in it. The interest is not casual, nor is it confined to the monetary aspect. It is very real. In fact it is from her deft and painstaking hand that the models mentioned at the beginning of this article take shape. A cultured lady of good family, her educational background was moulded by private tutors. An intelligent and diligent pupil she benefitted from specialized instruction in the arts and sciences. Now, as a hobby, and a boon to those she seeks to help, a considerable part of her time is devoted to the preparation of problems in minia- ture; a whetstone to the keen minds visiting Harvard for instruction. She has been given entire charge of the Seminars in ‘‘Homicide Investiga- tion” for State Police given by the Department of Legal Medicine. Her excellent and unselfish work was recognized by the New Hamp- shire State Police, who honored Mrs. Lee with the rank of “Captain” and appointed her educational director. She is also a member of the Interna- tional Association of Chiefs of Po- lice; Consultant, Department of Legal Medicine, Harvard Medical School; Honorary Curator, George Burgess Magrath Library of Legal medicine; Member of the New Hampshire Medicolegal Society which was formed in the summer of 1949 in her honor; and Honorary Mem- ber of the New England Policewom- en's Association. Her residence js at Littleton, New Hampshire. Other police forces have also honored this lady who has gone so far to aid the cause of Justice. Captain Lee is also secretary- treasurer of the Harvard Associates in Police Science, an organization of those who have attended one or more seminars in homicide investj- gation at Harvard. Among its mem- bership are many throughout the Eastern United States. So far there are only two or three Canadians, one of whom is a member of the B.C. Provincial Police. Not satisfied with her present sub- stantial achievement, she is contem- plating the preparation of mobile models for loan to police organiza- tions unable to send representatives to Boston for the Harvard Seminars. It is also expected that making facili- ties available to police departments in their own home environment will create a larger number of ‘“‘science- conscious’’ investigators. A New York detective agency, specializing in tracing missing per- sons, has been employed by more than 70,000 wives to find their husbands, but by only fifteen hus- bands to find their wives. Hmmmm.
