Page Thirty-eight him in the back; he’d decided as he lay awake that night to bring matters to a head. Near sunrise he’d sneaked quietly from the Police shack, forced the door of the lean-to, and grabbed a rifle and four cartridges. Retracting his steps he’d stood by the stove, taken deliberate aim at Doak’s thigh —intending merely to wound and hurt him—and fired. The Mountie had lived about four hours and had asked him frequently why he had done this thing. When Doak died he decided he might as well kill Binder, too. Standing beside the window he’d waited for the trader to start across the ice on his usual morning visit. Half way to the barracks Ali- goomiak’s second bullet had felled him in his tracks. Then, since he’d found white men could be killed so easily, Aligoomiak decided to kill the two remaining whites and return to the village of his people. The evidence against Aligoomiak and his uncle was overwhelming. Two Americans, Radford and Street, had been murdered by this same tribe only a few years before; then Fathers Rouvier and Le Roux had been muti- lated and slain. Now a Hudson’s Bay trader and a Mounted Policeman had succumbed to Cogmollock bullets. If something drastic wasn’t done, it would be unsafe for white men to venture into Coronation Gulf. Death Sentence As the death sentence was passed upon them, Aligoomiak grinned, stepped from the dock and handed a cigarette to Judge Dubuc who'd just decreed his death .. . In the ghostly twilight of a Febru- ary dawn, a group of broad-faced Nunatagmuit Eskimos gazed through the empurpled half-light at Herschel Island’s frozen barracks. With measured step four fur-clad Mounties crunched towards the “bone-house.” Between them, their Mongol faces registering mingled apathy and de- fiance, shuffled Aligoomiak and _ his uncle. The door slammed omniously. Across the wind-flailed wastes drifted the dismal death-dirge of a slinking wolf. On frosted hinges the doors H.C. Davis Ltd. ESTABLISHED SINCE 1910 General Merchants IMPERIAL OIL PRODUCTS Phone 2131 FRUITVALE creaked open. Four grey-faced Mounties and the hangman tramped back. Bill Doak and Otto Binder had been avenged . . . and the Arctic at last made safe for pioneering whites! %& *& Copyright by Philip H. Godsell, F.R.G.S. 1954. Red-Coated Mounties Model for Alaska Force Canada’s famed red-coated Mounties will serve as the model for Alaska’s relatively new Territorial Police, ac- cording to word from Superintendent A. P. “Bob” Brandt, who also announced that he plans to make use of F.B.I. methods in screening appli- cants for jobs on his department. Superintendent Brandt plans to set up in Juneau a headquarters which will keep in close contact with all parts of the territory. Authorized by the Territorial Legis- lature early in 1953, the department is in the process of organization and will extend its coverage to all types of en- forcement, criminal investigation, and the establishment of a crime labora- tory. Assisting Superintendent Brandt in the administration of the new depart- ment are Captain Wesley I. Gilman and Lieutenant E. L. Mayfield. * * JUPP’S MEN’S WEAR Tip Top Agent » Broadway P.O.
