: Several observations show that parents remain with the young until it, or they, are nearly full grown. Both parents accom- panied a young bird on Bouchie Lake at least as late as August 18, and a pair accompanied two young on Edy Lake at least as late as August 30. However, at Quanstrom Lake on September 3, a young bird was accompanied by only one parent. Arctic Loon--Gavia arctica (Linnaeus) ; Mr C. D. Muirhead made note of a small loon with patch of white on the head swimming in an open stretch of water in the Bulkley River during the winter of 1933-34. The arctic loon is known to occur as a transient in central British Columbia so that this sight record Based on the above description is considered ac- ceptable Red-necked Grebe (Holboell Grebe)--Colymbus grisegena (Boddaert). This was the commonest grebe and was found nesting, or accom- panied by young, on many of the lakes visited. At Puntchesakut Lake several were heard calling on May 7, and thereafter some were seen or heard daily until I left the region on Jume 5. It was still conspicuous when I returned there at the end of August. The majority on this lake were transients associated with other migrat ing grebes and diving ducks that assembled usually far out from shore. The largest numbers seen together in one day were le on May 24 and 25+ on September 3. Two pairs nested on the lake and these were together on their territories as early at least as May 10. The territory in each instance consisted of a small bay with a sedge marsh at the end. One nest, about 18 inches in diameter, made of rotted sedge and some water moss, floated amongst new growth of sedge about 10 feet from the outer edge of the marsh. It contained one egg on May 27. This nest was deserted and the pair built another one of the same material 14 feet from the first in a situation that seemed identical, except that the nest rim at most of its circumference touched or overlapped yellow pond lily leaves. It contained one egg on May 30. Another nest identically constructed, and empty on May 28, was built up from the root system of a sedge clump. It also was surrounded by yellow pond lily leaves Pairs of Holboell grebe, undoubtedly nesting, were found on other lakes in the Baker Creek region, namely, Tiltzarone Lake, A=
