After two years he was brought back to Vancou- ver, and in 1923 he was appointed Inspector of Police at Victoria, and in 1924 he was made Assistant Superintendent, a post which he held until taking over his duties as Warden of the Oakalla Prison Farm in June, 1929. NARROWLY ESCAPED DEATH In a life filled with excitement, drama and danger, Warden Owen is extremely reluctant to discuss one subject—himself. Queried as to his most thrilling exper- ience, he laughed. “I guess the narrowest escape I ever had was on a routine patrol from Log Cabin to Atlin, about 60 miles. Being the only constable—and young—I offered to break trail for a party of people. It was about 40 below at the time. I was on snowshoes, the others followed by dog team. I walked about 10 miles and then tired out, I rested awhile. Then the party overtook me, and I waved them on. I was left with my snowshoes and dog team, and, believe it or not, I fell fast asleep hanging on to the handlebars of the sled.
