OS LORIA TIOVEL MODERN, WITH HOT AND COLD RUNNING WATER LICENSED PREMISES PRINCE GEORGE - - B.C SUMMER EDITION Fresh Fruits police labours have increased considerably during the last two years with the develop- ment of the now well known gold mining district. This district has its headquarters at Port Alberni and is also one where both motor and marine patrols figure with equal importance. Lumbering, mining and fishing are the important industries. Centre of the mining boom in this terri- tory is Zeballos, where a detachment was necessitated by the rush which followed the SERGEANT G. J. DUNCAN In Charge West Coast Police District, Alberni SERGEANT DUNCAN was born October 7, 1884, in London, England, of Scottish parentage. At the youthful age of 17 he was mixing in the South African War. At the conclusion of hostilities he joined the Natal Police, with which he served until 1905. He then came to Canada and joined the North West Mounted Police. After four years’ service he took his discharge in 1909. Coming further west, he became a farmer in British Columbia, but the urge to get back in harness was too much for him. He joined the B. C. Provincial Police in May, 1914, his first station being Pouce Coupe. In 1920 he was moved to Elko, in 1922 he moved on to Fernie, then in succession came Cranbrook, Mission (where he was promoted to Corporal), Prince Rupert (where he moved up to Sergeant), then Penticton and Revelstoke. In 1937 he was trans ferred to Alberni, his present station. finding of gold. Fish reduction plants at Kildonan, Ecoole, Toquart, Ucluelet, Noot- ka, Ceepeecee and Kyuquot are within this District. Overseas cable and wireless serv- ices to Australia and New Zealand are centralized at Bamfield, near the mouth of 35 Modern Rooms Barkley Sound. Another spot of interest is famous Long Beach, which residents of the area are seeking to cultivate as a rival to Daytona Beach for speed trials such as those made by George Eyston and Sir Mal- colm Campbell. THE NEW PROVINCIAL POLICE HEAD CONGRATULATIONS are due Thomas W. S. Parsons on his official appointment as Commissioner of the British Columbia Police. Congratulations are also due the people of this province on obtaining such a capable and respected officer to head the provincial force. Commissioner Parsons has had a long and enviable record in police work. He knows his force. He knows the country over which he will have police jurisdiction. He com- mands the confidence of his men and of the entire province. There will be regret that an officer of former Commissioner McMullin’s ability should be compelled by the passing of the years to finally terminate a long and happy association with police affairs in British Co- lumbia. That regret may not be softened, but it will be compensated by the fact that a man of integrity, intelligence and experience is on hand to replace him—Vancouver Sun. The only man who doesn’t object to being stopped in the middle of a sentence—is a convict! In Russia a radio experimenter has built a radio set concealed in the head of a walk- ing stick. The iron tip of the cane serves as a ground wire. On this principle it should be comparatively easy to put a radio set in the night stick of every policeman. HOSKINS GARAGE O. H.
