All Kinds of Lumber, Mill Work and Hardware va SIDNEY, B. C. Page Eighteen were rewarded with the object of their quest, a broken door. handle with the attachment plate that fitted onto the door. Without further ado they mated the handle which they had brought with them, to the broken part. It was a perfect match. At last luck had broken their way. The garage owner was able to identify the broken piece as the one he had taken from the suspected car. The owner was subsequently charged in Provincial Police Court at Qualicum Beach with failing to return to the scene of an accident where someone had sus- tained injury. He pleaded “Not Guilty” and the various persons who had been eye-witnesses testified. The officers and the garage man introduced the evidence of the two pieces of door handle, and demonstrated how they matched perfectly. However the defence contended that the door handle had been broken while the car was being backed out of the garage. This was refuted in rebuttal testimony by the man who had repaired the car. He demonstrated to the court that the break occured in such a way that the car must have been moving forward and could not have been in reverse when the handle snapped off. The evidence was conclusive, and the court found the defendant “guilty as charged”. He was sentenced to three months imprisonment and his right to drive any motor vehicle was taken away from him for a period of twelve months. While there was a possibility that witnesses could be mistaken in their identification, the accusing door handle mutely pointed to the defendant’s guilt. Happily the child has recovered from her injuries. SENSE OF SMELL AT A CRIMINAL trial in New York several years ago, a clever trick employed by the lawyer for the defence discredited the claim of the State’s chief witness that he was an expert in distinguishing odours. Producing ten small bottles containing liquids with familiar odours, the lawyer asked the witness to identify them. In the test the expert was unable to name nine because the first bottle handed to him contained gasoline, the fumes of which so deaden the sense of smell that no other odour can be distinguished for several minutes. THEY WERE entertaining the vicar to lunch and the guest remarked to the small son of the house: “Don’t you ever say prayers before your meals, Tommy.” “Oh no,” said the youngster. “Dad says our cook is perfectly reliable.” ABSENT-MINDED POET THERE IS A delightful story told about the poet, Robert Nichols, who died recently. He was a restless man, but very like- able. His friends were always telling stories about his incapacity to keep still. One of these is that, while lecturing in Tokyo as professor of English literature, Nichols paced the platform so abstract- edly that he fell over the parapet. Without saying a word, he left the room and returned with a rope which he tied round his middle, fixing the other end to a staple. Revolving round this orbit, he finished his lecture safely.
