she was better and he took her out, but he

“Is that long ago?” I questioned.

“Oh, about a week,” he said. “That fella
couldn’t have luck the way he makes money
selling drink there after hours . . .” and so
he talked until after about five minutes I

“He took her out in the morning and he
took her back again that evening, just as it

“T always check up on every scrap of in-

public call office I came to I entered and
put through a call to the mental home that
the butcher had named. The information
was correct. Moran had taken his wife from
there on the morning of the 12th and had
returned with her that evening, saying that
she had become so violent that he wished to
have her re-admitted. She was taken away
in a motor car and brought back again to
the institution in a motor car. About twelve
months previously he had brought her home,
but on that occasion, they said, she had
been out about a fortnight.
