C—O 330 THE BELLA COOLA INDIANS (a) A female infant whose name was not known by the singers from whom this song was obtained. (4) Recorded as song VII D 53, National Museum of Canada; quartet, Reuben Schooner, leader, Jim Pollard, prompter and announcer, assisted by Té/-io Charlie and Steamboat Annie. This song, composed by Ta/-io Charlie, was used during the kusiut season of 1923-4 at the initiation of an infant great-granddaughter of Qoméanakwala. (c) Referring to the neophyte. This part of the song is worded for the benefit of the uninitiated. (d) It was impossible to obtain individual translations for these three sub- divisions. (ce) This might apply to any mountain where a group of the first settlers landed, but is said to refer to Nusgalst, the home of the dead man’s ancestral family. The implication of the theme is that the mountain erupted; Mount Nusgalst is not regarded as a volcano, and it is possible that the composer confused the origin myth of the dead man with that recorded in the preceding four songs in which there are references to the illumination of Mount Swakx at Kimsquit. Such a mistake would not be impossible in view of the decadence of Bella Coola culture. (f) In the sense of: Has rejoined his ancestral crest. (zg) That is: Qoménakwala has rejoined his ancestral crest. (4) That is: At the place where the first to possess his name came to earth. (i) An unusually long wordless chorus separates the second from the third part. (j) That is: Qoménakwala. (k) That is: Sénuximdxots welcomed Qomanakwala. The former was one of the latter’s first ancestors. () A reference to the localities where his first forefathers came to earth.
