( JRLING CLUB NEWS The 14th annual bonspiel will take place on February 29th, March Ist, 2nd and 3rd. This popular annual event is drawing teams from all over the north and from as far away as Vancouver and Dawson Creek. With 32 rinks entered it promises to be a hotly contested series of curling. Several firsts are occurring this year. For the first time high school rinks from the Cassiar Elementary Secondary School will be par- ticipating in our bonspiel. Teams skipped by Norman Day and Jack Nitti should give the other teams in the spiel a good run for their money. And for the first time a new “Snake Pit’ will be in use upstairs in the community centre. The spiel will consist of 3 events so that each team will curl a minimum of 3 times. The banquet will be held on Saturday, March 2nd, at 8:00 p.m., and since the Snake Pit is available for regular club members, junior members (i.e. those under 21) will be welcome at the banquet since no liquor will be served during the meal. The bonspiel and banquet are restricted to paid up members of the Cassiar Curling Club and to visiting rinks from outside the com- ( unity. At press time the Matwick and MacQuarrie rinks are battling for the Bell Asbestos trophy, each team having won their sectional round- robin events. The ladies bonspiel for the fairer members of the club will be held on Friday and Saturday, February 23rd and 24th. The social evening held on Saturday, Feb- ruary 24th, featured games and prizes and practice sessions for teams entering the big bonspiel at the end of the month. Coming events (weather permitting) include the inter-departmental and the USW trophy contests. At the latter, it is proposed that a skip’s draw be used. This consists of all the skips assembling together to draw the rest of their rinks. This should be interesting and could lead to some well balanced teams. ee He He HOCKEY NEWS The Asbestos Kings are unbeaten in 4 games against Watson Lake and one game against Dawson City.
