Several days ago a letter was received from Mr. Joel Wing who once lived a mile past Quartz Rock Creek. As the following exerpts will show, Mr. Wing is looking for pictures and information on his former home. It would be both interesting to readers and helpful to Mr. Wing if some information on earlier days in the area, and some pictures could be pub- lished in the Asbestos Sheet. People who have some pictures or know some stories of the early days can share them with the rest of us by sending them in to the Asbestos Sheet, at the Reception Office in Cassiar. “When | came away from Quartz Creek the last time in 1932, there was not more than one man living upstream from us. That would have been Claude Irvine. And Dan Keene down at Snow Creek. | have been trying for the last half dozen years to get some pictures of the two cabins, about six miles down the road from Cassiar — they belonged to my family and later to Bob Wilms — but always with negative results. And now | understand that they were destroyed for road improve- ment. | do wonder if the big ‘Quartz Creek Nugget” is still there. The big granite boulder that was about 20 yards down-trail from the nearer cabin. It will be appreciated if you can run a brief story telling that Joel, one of the two remaining sons of the late Dave Wing, is trying to learn the location of the Whip Saw, handles, etc., that Bob Wilms acquired from Dave Wing about 20 years ago. If pos- sible, I'd like to buy it and give it to our local historical society and museum.” Wouldn't it be a source of pride and achieve- ment if Cassiar could start its own historical society and museum. Numerous old relics of the gold digging days are scattered around the area. Think of the nerve-tingling tales that surround the old mine shafts and gold pans. The long winter nights ahead of us are just the time to start the ball rolling. ft EE eS Re The GIFT SHOP operated by the Retail Store will be opening in the near future.
