At that time most of the placer diggings were worked by individual miners, the majority of whom owned their own properties, or leased them from some absent owner. There were however, four or five large compan- ies who worked groups of claims by hydraulicing. Some of these compan- ies would use three monitors and employ quite a number of men, working two 12-hour shifts.
