absent. Entry in every case appeared the work of an expert. Occupants could not provide help except for listing stolen items, none of the loot appeared anywhere in the village or Vancouver Island, and cash stolen was in small amounts. Fingerprint experts saw their science fall to a human failing. Ru- mors began and eventually reached police officers. When the next robbery loot in- cluded two $20 bills and an alarm clock, Constable Kent notified all cafes to watch for a youngster spend- ing too freely for his age. The drag- net of rumors paid off the next morn- ing. A youngster attempting to tender a $20 bill readily admitted his part in the problem when confronted, that of obtaining change for his older brother. A horrified mother upheld the in- nocence of her sons until the elder led investigating officers under the home and pointed to a pile of dirt. Recovered was nearly all the stolen property. As constable in charge of Sidney detachment, which sprawls over a village of 1,100 residents and much unorganized territory, Constable Kent was confronted immediatelv from his posting in July, 1952, with the problem of trying to stop de- linquency before it began. Constable Kent was given no choice by the members and installed as president. The original 20 members have boosted attendance to 80 members, with an additional 20 adults taking interest. Club rooms were found in a former school and socials organized every second Saturday evening for those 13 years and over, and every second Friday for those under 13. Growing fields of activities spread to four basketball teams, bantam and juveniles for boys and girls, a soccer team, boxing, wrestling, tumbling and pro-rec activities in general. Constable Kent obtained equip- ment from the Provincial Govern- ment as well as other equipment in the village. Films from the RCMP and public libraries are shown at every social, in- cluding a comic Sinbad the Sailor, produced by a member of the RCMP and the travels of the famous force patrol ship, St. Roch. The club members also hear a speaker as well as providing much of their entertainment by their own initiative. The children so far have not shown lagging interest in this, their second such club. The first wore itself out, members reported, by lack of direction from adults. Assuring that adults will give the needed direction is Constable Kent, who is a member of the Community Hall Association ways and means committee, a director of Sidney and North Saanich Parks Board, a chair- man of Sidney Boy Scouts Associa- tion executive committee, an honor- ary Rotarian; and he holds a life membership in the Canadian Legion, presented to him while he was serv- ing overseas with the Canadian Scottish, from Victoria. * * In Victoria It’s the TIMES * FOR COMPLETE EVENING WORLD and LOCAL NEWS COVERAGE McCall Brus.
