upon the man who’d welcomed the
first whites with open arms, saved
another trader from starvation, and
who had left Pond’s Inlet rather than
have trouble with the trader Janes.
As the ship steamed slowly out to
sea a group of puzzled natives stood
silently upon the spot where, but a
few short years before, they'd wel-
comed the whites with joy and
laughter. Yet, instead of joy they'd
reaped naught but sorrow and dis-
illusionment. And, even as_ they
watched, the ship that bore their
broken hero from them grew smaller
and smaller until it merged into the
blue-and-white horizon. Truly, the
white man’s ways—and the white
man’s law—were hard to _ under-

Take “One for the Road,”
Swedish Doctors Advise

IF YOU DRINK. don’t drive—ex-
cept maybe in Sweden.

A report from that country quotes
two physicians as testifying that nerv-
ous persons are better drivers under
the influence than they are cold sober.

Reported in a North American
Newspaper Alliance story the Swedish
account said that the two physicians
of Oerebro, Sweden, had conducted
experiments “on 12 well-known per-
sons in their city.”

The results, as published in the
“Doctor’s Journal” of Stockholm, were
a contradiction of the cherished North
American adage against mixing
alcohol with gasoline.

The research was undertaken in
connection with a bill pending in the
Swedish Riksdag which would lower
the limit on the lawful percentage of
alcohol in a driver’s blood from .08
to .05 or .04.

As a result of their experiments the
two doctors recommended a_ less
stringent .07 limit.

Under Swedish law a blood test is
mandatory for all drivers involved in
traffic infractions. * *
