TERRE St PRE ES BR I Pacific Club, Victoria, B. C. Editor, THE SHOULDER STRAP: Dear Sir: Your journal has always been good read- ing, but the last number (12) is of special interest to me, by reason of the photograph of New Westminster, B. C., in 1860—my native city. This photograph was taken by my late father, Francis G. Claudet, who was the first Government Assayer in British Columbia, and was appointed from London, England, in 1859. He took several other fine pictures of British Columbia, of which I have a few prints still, but, unfortunately, Compliments of MILROY & COLLINS General Merchants | e SOOKE B.C. MOUAT BROS. C. the negatives got lost in London where I left them on returning to British Columbia in 1907. I gave some prints to the British Columbia Archives about that time, also a fine enlargement, 20 inches by 16 inches, of the picture referred to above, also a fine enlargement of another part of New West- minster, at the same time. I am afraid these enlargements got lost, as they didn’t appear to have them when I last enquired about them many years ago. I have, how- ever, got copies of these here myself. Another item of interest to me is the article “Where V.C.’s Are Made,” excerpt from the Umtali Advertiser. I was mining and assaying in Umtali and surrounding parts from December, 1895 to May 1898, and was in Umtali during the second Matebele rising in 1896. I note an appeal from B. S. A. Police, Salisbury, for stamps for their Stamp Club and, as I have a bunch of duplicates—none valuable, I fear, but may do for beginners —I feel inclined to send them some. Yours very truly, FRED G. CLAUDET. A YOUNG father in his haste to let his mother-in-law know that he had been blessed with twins, sent a wire which read: “Twins this morning. More tomorrow.” SUB-INSPECTOR RICHARD HARVEY PROMOTED | WITH THE RETIREMENT of Inspector John Macdonald, Sub-Inspector Richard Harvey, who has latterly been in charge of the plainclothes detail at Vancouver divisional headquarters, has been promoted to the rank of Inspector and takes charge of “B” | Division from the lst of January.
