Over The Edge Page 6 CONCERTS November 30,1999 Wide Mouth Mason Returns to Prince George | By Michelle Dubuc Wide Mouth Mason blew Canada away with its self-titled debut in 1997, which went gold, got the band nominated for a Juno, and won them a Canadian Music Radio award for best new group. Now Wide Mouth Mason are back, with an even stronger, more diverse sound on their new’ = album, ‘Where | Started.” “We had a little more time to do this one,” says lead singer Shaun Verreault from a bathroom pay- phone in Thunder Bay, - “We were able to do more stuff and just play what we had -in our heads at the time.” Shaun and his band-. mates Earl Pereira (bass & vocals) and Safwan Javed (percus- sion & vocals) have pro- duced -a bono fide hit with “Where | Started,” the bluesy single “Why,” the tender ballad “Companion,” and the reggae-tinged “Sugarcane” all receiv- ing heavy radio play and Muchmusic _ rotation. “We were able to get out to different people with this record,” says Shaun, “some of the songs still connect with fans of the last album, but others appeal to people who may not have gotten it initially. We're thrilled with the response it’s received, there’s a lot of variety at the shows now.” And just how did Wide Mouth Mason’ end up driving to and from these shows in a bus decorated with...a giant sperm? “It was our idea actually. We knew we were going to be touring for a long time, and we got tired of going in and out of clubs and just seeing alcohol and tobacco ads. We were very uncomfortable with the idea of being spon- sored by a _ tobacco company, so we threw the idea at Durex, almost as a joke.” Well, the company ran with it. They will make another return to the Generator Cabaret on Monday November 29. Don’t miss this chance to catch one of Canada’s best live acts. Tickets are $16.50 at the Generator. bbACK t JOY > aA,
