By his death British Columbia has lost one of its most colourful citizens. In public speeches, through newspaper articles and humor- ous stories, Louis, as he preferred to be called, never ceased to extol the virtues of his native district. On one occasion he even had fellow members of the legislature eating alfalfa. After a speech outlining the nutritive values of the plant, Louis distributed little bags of alfalfa to the M.L.A.’s and beamed proudly as they munched the food. He was born in June, 1888, at the little log-built staging post of Clinton and often told of the famous “bull teams” of 12 and 14 yoke of oxen that hauled the huge groaning freight wagons to the gold fields. Mr. LeBourdais learned to ride cayuses at an age when most children are scampering about on kiddie cars. By the time he was 13, Louis was busting bronchos. He also worked as a stage coach hostler. At 24 he married Katie Pughe and began his career of telegra- pher, serving the Canadian Pa- cific and Dominion Telegraphs. During his 23 years as a wire operator he became familiar with the entire province and parts of the Yukon, ending at Quesnel, where he made his home on the bank above the foaming Fraser River. In 1937 he was elected to the legislature and was a member at the time of his death. He enlisted as a private soldier in the Cana- dian Signal Corps in 1941 and was shortly after commissioned as assistant public relations officer in Pacific Command. By his death our readers are deprived of an article on the Cariboo, which he had promised for this issue, and which, owing to his illness, he was unable to complete. The sympathy of officers of the force and members of THe SHOULDER STRAP is extended to his bereaved family.
