But found that he couldn't ove. “Queer.” He thought, then his ody went rigid. In sudden panic, he ied to focus his thoughts back on ,ose events which had been so clear moment before .. . But the picture as gone. He felt the stiffling sensa- on of nightmare, and fought to free 5 hand. The walls of the cell emed to be closing in. He flung out is thin arms against the darkness, fe narrow prison-cot creaked hor- bly. For a split second before con- iousness, he was aware of his own ep labored breathing, then he was yake. Away off down the corridor, he uld hear footsteps approaching, ey echoed hollowly in the empty uls. Dully he noticed a prison-guard ationed outside the cell-door. “This is the day,” he thought, heyre coming for me now.” His art thumped sickeningly as he ught a mental picture of the lows, the rope dangling from ove. The Warden would raise his m, the trap in the floor would drop, id he, Lewis Storm, would swirfg off to space. The footsteps echoed rain in the corridor, closer. Frantically he scrambled off the bed 1d caught at the barred door, press- g close, he cried crazily at the guard. “There‘s something wrong, some- ing they should know, but I can’t ink ... I can’t remember what it is . . Maybe I can later,” his body gged against the iron door, “tell em to wait, please...” The footsteps stopped at the cell- oor. The very blood seemed to drain om his body and his legs began to umple. He slid slowly to the floor, s hands slapping feebly on the iron irs as he went down. Then the door yung open a little against him, and .€ warden squeezed in. The other ficials waited outside. Storm looked p with fear-flooded eyes. The warden reached down to help him up. “Steady, Storm,” he said, and the Warden’s big voice was sympathetic, “perhaps we can help, now.” Storm looked at him speechless, the impact of a bullet could not have stopped him quicker. “A devilish bad situa- tion,” said the warden, his face grim. A guard saw you sitting up in bed about sun-up, muttering about how Curry was killed. Evidently, that blow on the head locked off your memory at a critical point and the nightmare condition released it, temporarily, at least. You re-enacted the story for us, but the trick is to prove that Curry snatched the gun by the barrel, hit you on the head and that the gun went off at the moment of impact. It could happen that way, and if he held the gun by the barrel, the muzzle would naturally be pointing right down at his chest. But we have to prove it happened that way. You two were alone in the room, Curry is dead now. He can’t help you. I’ve never seen a man in a tougher position. There is a couple of things that will help. You tried to show us one thing during the nightmare, arms moving at your sides. Even your acquaintances didn’t seem to know about the queer paralytic condition of your arms. Its slight, almost indistinguishable, ex- cept when you reach up, your hands can’t grip very well, fingers tend to relax. The shot that killed Curry came from above the shoulder, travelled downward from base of neck. Even if your arm was jerked up in a struggle, it might be difficult for you to hold, or fire a gun in that position, we'll find out. And another thing adds credulity, you told us involuntarily, in a nightmare state. It’s better that way, otherwise, such a story, unsupported by absolute proof, might be con- sidered just a manufactured story. After all, no evidence of any kind was introduced to clear you. There wasn’t any. The way you were found and your own admissions, with such over- whelming, incontrovertible evidence, conviction was inevitable. There was no shadow of doubt raised, until the garbled message of your nightmare. Perhaps no new evidence would have been forthcoming with your mind in the state it was prior to the nightmare. But your memory, having been re- leased once, hypnotic influence, or “truth serum” might do it again. Even the lie detector might help now. Your case will be reviewed.” Storm swallowed hard, he moved slowly toward the cell-window, the queer dizziness had almost dis- appeared, he placed his burning fore- head on the steel bars. The bars were immeasurably cool. y& ¥& Pacific Pipe & Flume Limited Manufacturers of METAL IRRIGATION PIPE and SUPPLIES PORTABLE SPRINKLING SYSTEMS General Sheet Metal Work - Furnaces Office and Works: 145 Winnipeg Street Phone 356 and 919 PENTICTON, B.C.
