$$ RYOTE deere UIT | | Cassiar Wins Safety Award Brinco Mining Limited has been informed by Mr. T. Vaughn Ti.omas, District Mines Inspector that the Cassiar Division has won the B.C. Min- istry of Energy, Mines and Petroleum Resources ‘B’ Trophy Safety Award for 1982. This “B’ trophy award is made annually to the Open Pit Mine with the least number of lost time injuries, that operate 200,000 manhours or more during the competition year. Tite ‘A’ trophy is for small operators wiich operate less than 200,000 manhours per year. Congratulations to all employees for a job well done. This record would not be possible without their safety awareness and cooperation. Cassiar has not had a lost time accident since May of 1982 which means that approximately 700,000 lost time accident free hours have been accumulated. A million accident free manhours is a record which few mines achieve. The award presentation will take place in the Hotel Vancouver on March 30, 1983. nendent Candidate On March 9, 1983, Burgess A. Longson of Good Hope Lake officially declared himself as an Independent Candidate for M.L.A. for Atlin in the next Provincial Election. Mr. Longson came to work in the Atlin Riding in 1977 and has taken a keen interest in the people and pol- itics of the riding. In 1979 — while a resident of Bob Quinn Lake — he sponsored a Volunteer Program of Alcohol Recovery for the natives of Iskut village. This program is now in its fourth successful year and Longson has an open invitation to sponsor a similar program for Telegraph Creek. Longson was elected as a School Trustee for School District 87 (Stikine) in 1981 — representing Good Hope Lake. He was appointed as the Board representative to the Liard Board of Health and served as Committee Chair- man of this board. Mr. Longson was recently re-elected to the School Board for a two year term and is presently Chairperson for the Business Committee of S.D. 87. This committee is involved in the financial and operational aspects of the School Board. ; As an Independent Candidate, Mr. Longson is looking forward to the challenge of an election. He feels the peo- ple of the riding have to have a way to go other than with the N.N.P. or S.C. parties. Should a minority government be formed after the next election an Independent MLA would be a strong representative. As an Independent and if given a mandate from the people, Longson feels he will be a true representative of the people rather than a pup- pet of any particular party. assiar Courier the Voice of Cassiar Country APRIL 1983 Snowridge School Officially Opened On Thursday, March 17th, Mrs. Karen Clark unveiled a commemorative plaque to officially open the Snowridge Elementary School. Over two hundred parents, children and interested citizens. attended the ceremonies which were held in the sym of the new school. After the singing of the National Anthem and the introduction of the Official Party the Invocation was per- formed by Rey. William Morrison. Guest speakers were Mr. Owen Corcoran. Supt. of Schools (on behalf of the School Board), Mr. Peter Jones, Mine Manager of Cassiar Resources, Mr.-D. Verbeeck, Designer, Artisan Manufacturing Ltd. and Mrs. Sherry Sethan, Chairperson of the Board of Trustees. After listening to Mrs. Sethan’s introduction of the guest of honor, it was easy to see why Karen Clark was asked to perform the opening ceremony. Karen has been involyed in the education of the children in the Stisine (and points further North) for many years — giving far more of herself than anyone expects of any educator — to the benefit of both children and staff alike. Mrs. Clark addressed the audience, particularly the children, in her own thoughtful and unique style. After unveiling the plaque she received a standing ovation from everyone present — certainly a measure of the esteem in which she is held by everyone who knows her. Several gifts for the school were presented to Mr. Millar. Mr. Verbeeck, on behalf of Artisan, gave a book on ‘The Work of Emily Carr’ and the letters for the name of the school, which he said Artisan would install above the main entrance. Mr. Jones, on behalf of Brinco Mining, presented a Ted Harrison picture to Mr. Millar. ~SHUTDOWNS Cassiar On March 21 Brinco Mining announced a vacation shut- down of its Cassiar Operation to begin on June’ 28 at 8:00a.m. Operations in general, except waste and assoc- iated services will restart on August 2nd. Waste removal will not recommence until the end of August. The continuing depressed market was a major factor contributing to this decision. While Cassiar is weathering the depression better than many asbestos producers, the emphasis must still continue to be on cost saving and economic restraint. 16 cents Mr. Dick Chambers offered a vote of thanks to the many people who helped make the new school a reality and Father Pauwels led the audience in the closing prayers Refreshments, organized by the Parent Advisory Council " were served after the conclusion of the ceremonies. The opening of the new school marks the end of a- long battle for a new facility. In 1978 an extension was added to what is now the Cassiar Secondary School. Even then a new school was needed but the extension was all the government woula allow at that time and the fight for a new facility continued. In the 1981-82 Capital Expenditures Program School District No. 87 requested funding from the Ministry of Education to construct a new (K-7) Elementary School in Cassiar with a capacity of 50 to 200 students. The Ministry tempered the request and provided fund ing of $2,223,200.00 to build a (K-6) Elementary School with a capacity of 50 Kindergarten/150 elementary stu- dents. Feeling that this did not meet the projected needs the Superintendent and the then Official Trustee made a personal appeal in Victoria for the larger unit. The appeal was successful and working drawings, etc. for the site-built schoo] were commissioned.’ The additional money ($500,000.00) for the larger building was to be provided in the 1982-83 Capital Program. However, by March 1982 the spectre of restraint had made its presence felt and the $500,000.00 was not ayail- able. There was insufficient money for a site-built 50/200 stuaent school, and so the district was forced to consider an alternate design and an alternate method of construc- tion. Net result: the fine modular school built on the re locatable principle by Artisan Manufacturing which now serves Cassiar’s Elementary students. ANNOUNCED San Antonio Brinco Mining Ltd. has announced that mining operations in the upper levels at the San Antonio Gold Mine in Bis- sett, Manitoba, will be discontinued May 27, 1983, by which time presently developed reserves will have been exhausted. The shutdown is planned because of lower than expected grades of ore in the upper levels. Evaluation is being done by the Company on the feasibil- ity of mining the lower levels, where higher grade ore re- serves are indicated. 5s Ae
