Wnt Friday Ocfobop 28th af The Rantada § Trevefs $80 Jon Parrac (Hout) and Rristin Bauep (Par) Ie When the duo Girls released their first album, simply titled Album in 2009, it was welcomed into the music world as one of the top ten albums of 2009 by Spin, Rolling Stone, and Pitchfork — a considerable achieve- ment considering one half of the duo, Christopher Owens, was raised in a family of active Children of God members. However, it is evident in the band’s work that being cut off from any contemporary music outside of the group certainly did no damage to him, as he seems to have a talent for producing dreamy, low-fi indie rock. Father, Son, Holy Ghost is their latest release on the True Panther Sounds label, following a 6 song EP entitled Broken Dreams Club in the autumn of 2010. Father, Son, Holy Ghost is filled with their trademark hazy, poppy 50’s style music, with the usual taste of quirkiness to push it past others of the same genre. They have been referred to as “shoegaze” by some, however that label is not quite accurate and true to the real pioneers of the genre such as My Bloody Valentine. Father, Son, Holy Ghost opens up with the surfy, catchy “Honey Bunny” which has an anthem-y sum- mery feel to the chorus. It is a pretty fun album opener and provides hope that the songs to follow will contain the same upbeat fun. “Alex” follows and is a cute, dreamy love song that at moments sounds a little like M83 — which is a sure compliment and evi- dence of their success. The highlight of the entire album is most definitely “Saying I Love You.” It sounds like someone else wrote it, so much so that listeners might even find themselves checking Allmusic.com in blatant dis- belief. It really showcases their abil- ity to say something profound with so few words and such simple language. It is also one of the songs that dem- onstrates just how well the boys can “clean up” their music, as it is so well-polished. There is nothing magical or out- standing about the lyrics — neither of the band members is a particular lyric-master, however, an admirable thing is that they do not bother to complicate the language. A line or two in each song is a bit simple and seemingly pointless or obvious, how- ever, it is refreshing to, at times, not bother with pretentious lyrics full of sentences that maybe even the com- poser does not understand. There are a few tracks that could have perhaps been left out, but overall this album manages to resonate a favourite re- lease of 2011.
