Morrin has al- ready approaced a manager of a local dollar store who has agreed to pull the object from the sales floor. Amajor car collision oc- curred 23 kilometres south of Quesnel, March 16, when a pick up truck collided with a car. Two occupants of the car were killed, and the two occupants of the truck were taken to Quesnel’s hospi- tal with non-life threaten- ing injuries. The cause of the accident is believed to have occurred when the car lost control on slippery road conditions. The Canfor Corpora- tion is temporarily clos- ing some of their mills in response to poor economic conditions. The mill in Chetwynd will.close for one week, and the Rustad mill in Prince George will close for — two weeks. A mill outside of Vanderhoof will also close for two weeks, and the saw- mill in Mackenzie will close for another two weeks at the end of March. BC Stats and Statistics Canada are at odds with each other after the recent release of Canada’s census. StatsCan said Prince George is sitting at a population of 70,981 people, a 2% drop says. Prince George is at 77,343, which is 2.3% high- _ er than 2001 levels. Both or- ganizations will be figuring out estimates of how much they were off over the next few years. A new provincial law now requires that bouncers and other security personnel at businesses must obtain li- cences and undergo training for their position as security. Many local club operators were caught off guard on discovery of this new legis- lation, as reported by The Citizen of Prince George, but some believe the new law is a good measure to en- sure people’s safety. Conrad Black, former: Canadian media mogul, and his co-accused, went to trial March 19, for a list of charges including money laundering, tax evasion, racketeering and obstruction of justice. Charges go back to charges laid against the men for taking 83 million dollars (US) from company Hollinger, now named Sun Times Media Group Inc. The Conservative gov- ernment’s budget will undergo a confidence vote on Wednsday, March 21, on . the matter of an NDP motion which decries the budget as ignoring the needs of lower and middle class families. The NDP and the Liberal parties are forming the ma- jor opposition to the budget, while the Bloc Quebecois are voting in favour due to favourable budgetting, mak- ing it likely the budget will pass. (See “Federal Budget Review” on page 5) CSIS has made a secret document for the Prime Minister which calls for a fight against “homegrown’ islamic terrorism. The docu- ment is dated only days after last June’s arrest of 17 terror suspects. Some blame, ac- cording to the document, should be placed upon the parents of people who might put their children on the path toward the fundamentalist vision of Islam, which can - evolve to terrorism. Greenpeace _ activists were arrested after chain- ing themselves to the gate of Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s residence. They were protesting Harper’s support, or in their view lack of support, for the Kyoto protocol. The protest lasted three hours before the pro- testors were detained. A 33-year old man was found crawling in the ceil- ing of a Maple Ridge A&W restaurant. When police ar- rived on the scene the sus- . pect threatened them with a needle. An employee first heard noises from the ceil- ing on Sunday, March 18, and called police. The man is recommended to be charged with attempted break and enter. A passenger bus in Thailand lost control when the brakes in the vehicle malfunctioned. The bus caught on fire and the inci- dent resulted in 29 deaths and 10 people injured. Some survived by leaping out of the bus before they were ind the world in an easy-to-use package _ ‘since 2001, while BC Stats overtaken by flames. Alain Robert, a French man who is known as the “French Spiderman”, was arrested in Malaysia after trying to scale the Petronas Twin Towers, the tallest twin towers in the world. He was flagged down by authorities and gave himself up on the 60th floor, while onlookers cheered him on. 10 years ago he was arrested on the 60th floor of the other build- ing. A judge has ordered a DNA test on Anna Nicole ~ Smith’s baby. The results will hopefully put to rest a dispute over custody of the baby which began when Smith died last month. Larry Birkhead and Howard K. Stern are disputing which one is the biological father. Stern is listed on the birth certificate as the father.
