Thus they advanced slowly until they reached the top”. But this breath-taking account was a bit discounted when King, in reply to an unsuccessful party’s accusation that his party had never reached the top, returned with a party which included three women. Official observers at the old Court House (now Victory Square) sighted their fire and saw their figures on the sky line. Curiously enough a party who thought they were making the first ascent of the Eastern Lion next year, found the record of a party who had forestalled them by about a year. Alan Morley, in Romance of Vancou- ver states the earliest name by which the Lions were known to white settlers was Sheba’s Breasts. The Sisters seems to have been a name used widely before 1890. Major J. S. Matthews, city arch- ivist, gives the Indian name as Chee- chee-yoh-ee and renders it as The Twins. Pauline Johnson interprets it as The Chieftain’s Daughters. She tells a legend of twin daughters of an ancient Capilano chief who implored their father to turn the feast marking their attainment of marriageable age into a meeting of all the warring Indian tribes to pledge unending peace. The Saghalie Tyee transformed the sisters into moun- tain peaks as symbols of peace. In view of this association it would be less than generous to try to withhold from a chief of the Capilanos whatever honour rests in sharing in the first ascent of the Western Lion.
