And the Race was on in the first and only UNBC Great Mascot Contest. However the results have yet to come in. The application deadline (March 10) has come and gone and now UNBC students are left to ‘ wonder what now? That is provided they even knew there was a contest (if not SURPRISE!). The contest was opened to all members of the general public. Entries were asked to include a rough illustration of the * proposed mascot, along with a brief description it and its relevance to UNBC. Because additional development and refinement of the winning entry has to be done creativity was encouraged. That’s supposed to have meant all of us creative people that can’t even draw a stick man actually had a chance to win (Not Likely). Oh well there was no notable prize anyway. The mascot will be licensed to the UNBC Fitness Center, with revenues being utilized to develop athletic/recreation programs and acquire additional equipment and facilities. * On Rampage/the Bottle/Parade the by Smith/Withrow Do you like to get up early and spend most of your free time on a bus? If so, the trip to the Western Canadian Association of Geographers Conference was for you! The UNBC Geography Club along with the entire Geography Department faculty attended the conference in Victoria March 3-4. Funding for the Geography Club registration and accommodations came from three 50/50 Raffles held over the past few months. Thanks to everyone who supported the raffles, even though you lost. We would also like to thank the Geography Department for letting us tag along on their bus with the VCR! Academics from universities throughout western Canada and the western United States ‘attended in record numbers. UNBC was very well represented in the paper presentations by our faculty; those tireless, dedicated, happy, brilliant, articulate, peerless, and just all around — sparkling examples of humanity that wander the halls of this institution. (Or lurk in the comers, as the case may be). So, for those of you who had to wait for your midterm marks, you spend 12 hours confined on a bus listening to the mellow tones of a slightly out of tune acoustic guitar and 6 tone-deaf warblers, and see how much marking you get done! For some, who were lucky enough to get in, one of the high points was the coastal ecosystems tour. Representatives from U Vic zipped us out on teeny-tiny Zodiacs to the Race Rocks Ecological Reserve and we saw Harbour Seals, an Elephant Seal, Stellar and California Sea Lions, various birds and one jellyfish! Other wild adventures included -a walking tour of residential (A architecture, and an intimate #f look behind the closed doors of Victoria's Chinatown. If any of this sounds inviting, and you want to be part of next year's trip, contact any Geography Club member, or your family therapist. Next year,..Lethbridge??
