by a witness to threaten him — “I
will shoot you.”

Suicide Mentioned

Sir Patrick claimed that what the
witness had heard was probably, “I
will shoot” — referring to suicide. He
also questioned the reliability of other
testimony — one witness testified to
having heard one shot, another two.
He claimed that two shots had not
been fired consecutively, as the two
used were separated by a live shell.

An eminent firearms expert and Sir
Bernard Spillsbury, the well-known
pathologist, both said that as there
were no powder burns on the mur-
dered man, which there should have
been, if the gun went off accidentally,
as the prisoner said it had, when she
was clinched in a close struggle with
her victim.

The revolver had, by some mishap,
been handled without much care, and
the finger prints were too smudged
for recognition.

She Kept to Her Story

And so the trial continued. The
best point in Mrs. Barney's favor was
that she had not changed her story
from the first time she told it in her
apartment. Telling points against her
were the testimony of the neighbor,
who claimed to have heard her say,

“T will shoot you,” and the one w ho
had heard the shot.

Of course, her past record was
against her, because she had aimed a
gun at her lover on a former occasion.

The well-known criminal judge,
Mr. Justice Humphries, presided over
the trial, and in his address to the
jury he gave usual caution as to rea-
sonable Glowline etc., and after that it
was up to “the 12 good men and tr ue.”

Mrs. Barney was seen no more in
Knightsbridge or the fashionable

and she, who had been their leading
light, left the country to live in Paris,
where she became the centre of an-
other gay set. But she was getting
older and the pace was too swift.
