He was a man of less than average
height and moderate build. His
enormous head was crowned by a
large crop of thick black hair, which
he twisted in place with sticks. Some-
times he twined a live snake in his
hair. He painted his face black, with
vermilion stripes across cheeks and

from his ears.

He always carried a musket and a
double-edged knife slung around his
neck. He was irritable, and trembled
with passion while speaking. He
shouted his conversation rapidly.

Once he killed a member of the
Songhees tribe near Victoria, and for
reprisal they killed his nephew. Bent
on revenge, he crept upon the Hud-
son’s Bay Company farm at Saanich
and riddled a Clallam youth with five
musket shots while the lad was help-
ing with the milking. Then he left as
stealthily as he had come, pausing to
loose several shots at Hudson’s Bay
shepherds.

A force of 140 men gathered to
sack his lodge, but Tzouhalem and his
men repulsed the landing party. One
wounded man was left behind when
the raiders pulled away in their boats,
and Tzouhalem decapitated him.

After taking part in his earlier,
abortive raid on Fort Victoria, Tzou-
halem went to Fort Langley, where
he openly boasted he meant to kill
Murray Yale, H.B.C. chief factor.
He failed to do it, but he murdered a
woman in the Langley Indian village
because she declined to hand over a
blanket.
