THE FERRY across the Fraser at Boston Bar might possibly be called a car lift, rather than a ferry. At any rate, it’s method of operation is about the same as a ski lift. When it was decided to build a ferry crossing at this point, it was found that owing to the fast current, the extreme difference between high and low water, and the danger to a water craft from floating debris and ice coming down stream, it would be impractical to use the conventional water borne ferry. Cables were strung across the stream between Boston Bar and North Bend, anchored at each end to a 70- ton concrete block on one side, and to the bedrock on the other. These cables run over towers, which are 1,019 feet apart. The sag of the cables is 51 feet; and the 1 and %4 inch steel cables have a 6-ton cage suspended from pulleys running on them. The cage is hauled back and forth between the landings, 749 feet apart, by other cables which run around a drum powered by a gasoline engine. This aerial ferry takes a one-ton truck with its load, or an equivalent we'ght, on each trip. The rates of fare are 50c for trucks or light deliveries, 25c for cars, horses or cattle, 10c for smaller stock, and 5c for pedestrians. The cost of construction was $20,000. At low water the cage is 90 feet above the river in the centre of the crossing, but at extreme highwater this distance shrinks to 30 feet. It is thought that this is the largest aerial ferry in North America. Many tourists make the crossing each summer merely for thrill involved. ye 4 THE NUGGET CAFE WE SERVE ONLY THE BEST xk * QUESNEL B.C. * STOP THIEF! STOP THIEF!
