spluttering pen moved over the war-
rant.

Lesser Slave Lake rocked with
laughter next morning when word got
around that Sergeant Anderson had
arrested King for killing his partner
all because he’d found some bits of
moose-bone in the ashes of their camp-
fire. From an insignificant traveler
King became, overnight, a popular
hero to whom the sympathy of every
half-breed and trapper was extended.
This was the best joke yet!

While King indignantly protested
his innocence behind the bars at Buf-
falo Bay, Anderson doggedly rounded
up the articles he’d disposed of. Soon
the police stables housed his four
horses, each bearing the “Diamond
C” brand, while in the outhouse
were piled a big bear-trap, forty fox-
traps, canvas panniers, pack-saddles
and other things. Meanwhile the
Midnight Sun, upon which King was
about to embark when Andy’s muscu-
lar hand closed on his shoulder, was
chugging south across the blue waters
of the lake on her weekly trip to
Athabasca Landing.

Again the sergeant turned his
horse’s head towards Mistoos’ village.
He'd acted on a hunch in arresting
Charlie King, and realized he’d have
to dig up more evidence quickly to
justify his high-handed action in pre-
venting King from getting a week’s
Start on him by leaving on the
steamer.

A Fruitful Search

Again he sifted the ashes with a
window screen of mosquito gauze. He
was rewarded with more pieces of
bone, a waistcoat buckle and a broken
cobbler’s needle. An excited whoop
sent him to the lakeshore in time to
relieve an Indian of a dripping pair
of top-boots. As he drained out the
water a soggy bundle thudded at his
feet. Unwinding the cloth he sorted
out the contents; a nugget tie-pin, a
round sovereign-case, part of a gold
watch-chain, an empty cartridge shell
and a watch. Something glinted on
the ground. Stooping, the sergeant
picked up a minute piece of steel.
Hurrying to the camp he compared
it with the piece of broken cobbler’s
needle he’d sifted from the ashes, and
found they fitted perfectly. Things
were picking up. For these two bits of
metal linked the discoveries in the
ashes with those found in the slough,
while the sovereign-case pointed to
the owner being an Englishman.

As he gazed over the greying
waters some hunch told Andy that
beneath them lay hidden the key to
the mystery he was trying to unravel.
If he could only drain that slough.
But winter would be upon the land
before and if permission could be
obtained, and the slough would be
frozen.
