Shape China's History HAAOKON SULLIVAN STAFF WRITER “Dynasty Warriors 5: Empires,’ by Japanese developer Koei, is the third game in the Dynasty Warriors 5 tril- ogy. As with all of the Dynasty War- riors games, the story is based on Luo Guanzhongis popular epic Romance of the Three Kingdoms which involves multiple warlords fighting to dominate China between the years of 184 and 280 AD. The game has many of the same characteristics as the other two Dynasty Warrior 5 games but the additions great- ly improve the entertainment value. The best addition is the ability to raise your own empire and have control over what regions you want to conquer. With this system, you can also change the history of the Three Kingdoms by con- quering all of China under your banner and having officers who were in the story join forces with their mortal enemies. As well, you will have to use diplomacy to succeed, so expect alliances to be formed and betrayals to occur. Another factor have to worry about is the people living in your territory because if you do not treat them right youfll suddenly have a peasant army assisting an enemyis in- vading army in the hopes of a better life. This revolt will slow down your progress in the combat and cause casualties in yOLEABY- The combat systegn is identical to the system in all the other Dynasty Warriors games: you choose a character in your army, you choose the equipment you want to bring, and then you raise hell on the battlefield with your one man army. In a third person view, release devastat- ing combos upon the enemy soldiers and officers in the strategic points on the battlefield while also gaining experi- ence for your officer, Itis not all hack and slash however. Direct your troops and use tactic abilities to assist your troops in defeating the bulk of the enemy army. This is especially important be- cause your character may be immensely powerful but can easily be overwhelmed by being outnumbered. The music in Dynasty Warriors is mostly composed of a rock style which helps get your adrenaline running gets you absorbed into the urgency of the situation. As well, the voiceovers in the game are a bit off. The acting is bad and the translation can seem awkward at times (“You skill sent my heart to ra- cing”). The graphics are also outdated and there is a fog ahead of your officer because the software cannot handle all of the action on the battlefield. In general, Dynasty Warriors: Em- pires is a game best suited for those who enjoy both strategy and action games. The game can get a bit repetitive after a while but then you just play a differ- ent scenario to change the situation you start out with and the ruler you play as. If the empire addition is beginning to get on your nerves, you can also just play in free mode to play in the battles that oc- curred in Romance of the Three King- doms. Finally, if you want the full story of the Three Kingdoms, you can either go to http://www.threekingdoms.com/ or you can buy the book at a bookstore.
