DAWSON, WADE & CO. LIMITED -- GENERAL CONTRACTORS 775 CLARK DRIVE | VANCOUVER, B.C. Page Fifty-eight an aeroplane, one of them from Fort Nelson was named Clark; he was very skilful with dogs, and soon had the three of us pulling our own little sleigh. He showed us how “Gee” meant to turn to the right, “Haw” to the left, “Whoa” to stop, and “Mush” to start pulling. Start Rear Work On the last day of March, 1937, we three had our first patrol. From the trading post some 30 miles up McDames Creek to a mining camp, not far from where they said the largest gold nugget in B. C. was found in 1877. It was worth $1300 at that time. It was a grand experience for us three young lads to trot up and down the trails travelled by other dogs. We saw and smelled many strange animals; moose, caribou, wolves, coyotes, rabbits and fox. I never thought there could be so many men in the world as at that mining camp. We saw many Indian dogs, they weren't as big as us and they had a totally different smell—because they eat raw meat all the time I’m told. Indians use a different kind of harness too, it has a sort of breast- band and doesn’t fit closely round the neck like ours. All the teams were packing supplies to some place way up on the mountain tops. We had a terribly difficult trip back to the Post. The ice had gone out of Me- Dames Creek in places, and once we had to splash our way through swift flowing icy water up to our bellies. When we were safely on the other side my master very carefully dried our paws. It was slippery on the ice and several times we nearly glided into the creek but a long rope tied to the sleigh pulled us to safety from the top of the river bank where the boss trotted. We didn’t get an opportunity to travel much more that winter as the snow melted rapidly and already hundreds of different birds were making their appearance. There were quite a few ducks and geese swim- ming around in every little bit of open water, and one day we saw a swan. The ice went out on Dease River the first week in May and the Arctic summer com- menced. We dogs didn’t have a great deal to do during the summer, being tied up most of the time—though every few days we'd be let loose for a run. When out in the woods with Nipper, a cocker spaniel with a marvellous nose, he would show us the difference between rabbit and squirrel smells, and the harmless coyotes and the terrifying smell of wolf. He showed us the habits of ptarmigan and blue grouse, how to recognize teal, mergansers, mal- lards and the beautiful wood duck. GREAT EVENT OF YEAR The first boat from the Outside chugged gaily down to the Post towards the end of the first week in June and triggered excitement no end. Men were running about, shouting and talking till sunrise. The mail, oranges and eggs seemed to be popular.
