Page Thirty-four hind him and snatched the loaded automatic from the table, “I'll come quietly. But what’s it all about?” With head held jauntily erect Krefchenko accompanied the armed party across the lot, swaggered down the street and stepped into the waiting auto. An hour later Chief MacPherson was back at the College Avenue house searching the front yard. Under the lower fence scantling he found two fat rolls of bills which, upon being counted, totalled eight hundred and ten dollars. To excited re- porters he had little to say when he drove back to the station. “Yes, I’ve just picked up eight hundred and ten dollars,” he ad- mitted. “And yesterday I located seventy- four ten dollar bills in the southeast part of the city. I believe theyre part of the Plum Coulee loot.” Behind the bars at Rupert Street station Krefchenko took the situation amiably, joked with his guards and assured them that when his time came to speak he’d produce an alibi that nobody could: shake. With Krefchenko in their clutches police soon realized it was one thing to place him behind the bars and quite another thing to link him definitely with the Plum Coulee murder. Time and again the hearing was postponed without any formal charge of murder being made. Newspapers, voicing the views of the man on the street, asked consistently if Krefchenko was the culprit, or if police, looking for a goat, had picked on him because of his former criminal record. Admitting that Krefchenko was a crook, he'd at least proved himself a clever one in the past, and was it likely he’d choose for a bank robbery a place where he was well-known? Not till December 30th did Krefchenko appear before Provincial Magistrate Bonny- castle to face a formal charge of robbing the Plum Coulee bank of four thousand, seven hundred dollars and murdering J. H. Arnold, the manager. Brisk and trim in a well-pressed suit of navy blue, he entered the dock with smiling unconcern and fol- lowed proceedings with an amused and tol- erant smile. As evening drew on he com- mented with a yawn on the tedious nature of proceedings, and reminded the judge that though he wasn’t in a particular hurry he’d like to go rabbit hunting in the spring. On the cold grey night of January 10th, Krefchenko stood chatting amiably with his two guards, Flower and Reid, in his cell on the third floor of the Rupert Street gaol. Ceasing his conversation he commenced to pace restlessly to and fro while the two G. P. TINKER & CO. LTD. REAL ESTATE RENTALS GENERAL INSURANCE @ Prince Rupert, B. C.
