Page 10 January 1989 Cassiar Courier Minor Hockey Marie Smith The highlight of the first half of the hockey season for the Atom and Novice division players was a trip to Watson Lake on Sunday, December 11. The two teams travelled to Watson Lake and played two games each. The first Novice game ended with a final score of 4 to 2 for Watson Lake. Jeffery Johnston scored both of Cassiar’s goals. The Atom’s first game ended with a score of 4 to 3 for Watson Lake. Andrew Smith had the hat trick for Cassiar. The Novice’s second game was very close, with Watson Lake scoring the winning goal with 29 seconds left in the third period. The final score was 4 to 3 for Watson Lake. Jeffery Johnston scored two more goals and Dylan Thibeault-Johnston scored Cassiar’s other point. The Atom’s second game ended up being quite exciting, as the score was 6 to 3.for Watson Lake with 3 minutes left in the third period. Cassiar added two more points before the game was over, to make the final score 6 to 5 for Wat- son Lake. Andrew Smith scored two more goals, Ricky Howard scored two goals and Robby Howard scored 1 goal in the final game of the afternoon. The teams played good competitive hockey in all games. Hopefully Watson Lake will make a return visit early in January. The Novice and Atom teams will travel to Watson Lake for their annual tournament on January 20, 21 and 22, 1989. Watson Lake has had a decline in enrollment par- ticularly in the PeeWee and Bantam divisions, somewhat similar to our situation here in Cassiar. As such there haven’t been any concrete plans made for our PeeWee players at this time. Again a thank you for the support from the people of Cassiar during the first half of our hockey season. . tn e Si mt q 2) en Has Been Opened at the Snowmobile club . 5 President Brien Kellar (778-7723) Vice President Shawn Whalen (778-7225) Secretary/Treasurer Tracy Kellar (778-7723) The Cassiar Snowmobile Club has once again begun their winter activities. The Kids did a short performance for their parents which was . enjoyed by everyone. Following this everyone was invited on the ice. It was nice to see some of the parents out there, and it looks like our kids could maybe give us a few pointers. It looks much easier watching from the side- lines. To close, a luncheon was served by Sonja Slana and Bev Storie, with a visit from Santa.) Gil Harrison made a few presentations to the kids who raised the most money in their age groups for the skate-a-rama. Contratulations to Brendan Connolly, Nancy Sherlock and Jaimie Har- rison. Also we’d like to thank Lee Coran, Shirley Howard and Carol Deyo who put in a lot of time to make our annual skate-a-rama such a great success. Once again, our Toy Bingo was a great hit, thanks to Ginette Ashcroft and Tracey Kellar who worked hard in arranging the event. With a large variety of toys and prizes, and the help of many parents, a good time was had by all. There were over 120 people in attendance. Probably the happiest time was had by our Grand Prize winner, Colleen Driscoll, who can now sleep better on those cool nights, camping in her new sleeping bag. Congratulations! Vicky Molloy is pedalling her new “pedal car” do- nated by The Grocery People. Our 50/50 winner, Sherry Chapple, now has $66.50 more to spend. To close, let’s take a look at one of our most re- cent programs. CANPOWERSK ATE Canpowerskate is an instructional skating program for skaters of any age who want to improve their skating technique, The Canpowerskate program teaches skating tech- - niques of special interest to hockey. It will help develop balance, power, agility and endurance. Skating is the ‘foundation skill for hockey. Any opportunity young hockey players can take advantage of to improve their skating should be encouraged. In the program there are 20 separate skills taught that are of particular interest to hockey. If a skater masters these skills, he or she will be better able to concentrate on the game and be a more val- uable team member. In other words, the game will be more fun! For more information on this particular program, contact one of the Blue Valley Figure Skating executive.
