ARNTWE-- 6 SMORING CAMPAIGN MARIE TRACY Marie Tracy smoking cessationalist from the B.C. Tuberculosis Society visited Cassiar, Clinton, and Whitehorse during August 15 to August 29. Marie Tracy is one of North America's recognized Smoking Cessation Specialists. The object of her visit was to introduce the Christmas Seal people's ''Kick-it"' program. The whole northern "'Kick-it'' program is being sponsored by Cassiar Asbestos Corporation Limited. THE RALLY Over 70 people attended the Rally held at the Old Lions Hall in the Commmity Centre Thursday, August 26th. This surprising number indicates both the concern and interest that people have in regards to smoking. At the Rally 16 people signed up for the course witt more to come. There are also many people who have KICKED: the habit. To these people. ..CONGRATULATIONS. OPERATION ''KICK IT" Operation "Kick It"' is a free public service pro- vided by the B.C. Tuberculosis-Christmas Seal Society. Operation ''Kick It' is a non-medical smoking cessation program. This method involves a group approa- ch which provides the smoker with the skills to learn to become a nonsmoker. Eight to eighteen people meet weekly for support and guidance. Operation Seek Tt" members are issued materials weekly to aid in their pro- gress through the eleven weeks of the course. Mail follow-up at four months and one year assesses long-term success of the program. ad An instruction manual has been written for selected "Kick It" graduates to become volunteer group leaders. These volunteers attend 15 hours of training and are provided with materials and support necessary to conduct a class. These classes are located at community colleg- es, recreation centres, health units, and hospitals. A monthly workshop brings the volunteers together to discuss problems and to share experiences. Most smokers suffer great anxiety when faced with the prospect of quitting. Operation ''Kick It" graduates have béen prepared for a smokeless future because they like themselves better as nonsmokers and no longer feel a need to smoke. Operation "Kick It" involves: 1. Understanding stress. 2. Dividing smoking into component habits which can be unlearned. 3. Changing one's self-image from smoker to nonsmoker. 4. Getting to know and appreciate oneself. 5. Taking credit for having done the work that affected the cure. 6. Integrating weight control as part of quitting smoking. 7. Learning to relax and to cope without reaching for a cigarette. ~ COUNSELLORS The two counsellors who will be giving the course at Cassiar are John Inch and Peter Brown. Time once again to be thinking about filling up your freezer with the winter's supply of steaks, roasts and mooseburgers. No doubt Sunday will see lots of Yukoners start up their cars and trucks and set off hunting their moose in the time-honoured traditional method, so beloved by so many hunters, i.e. driving up and down the highway with a loaded rifle by their side until they see something to shoot at, then stopping, and sometimes even getting out of their truck to shoot it. Other travellers on the highways should beware, especially those on foot, as any- thing without a pair of headlights glaring out of its front end is going to look something like a moose to somebody. Actually driving up and down the highway with a loaded gun by your side or even with an unloaded gun by your side, is not the right way to go hunting as every- one knows that the only time you see a moose is when you haven't got your gun with you. Therefore the only sensible thing to do when you go moose hunting is to leave your gun behind you. 'Ah,' you will no doubt say, "but how am I to get my moose if I don't have _any gun?' - Another way to get your moose is to build a moose- trap - this is pretty much like a mouse trap only a bit bigger so you have to be very careful how you set it. If you use cheese as bait for it, be sure the cheese is made from moose milk. Better still use beer nuts as these are most moose's favorite food. If you can't be bothered with a moose-trap, (they are quite heavy to carry around in the bush with you) try dropping rocks on your moose's head instead, when it comes out of its moose-hole. You've probably wondered where moose always hide when you're out hunting them with your gun: well, they hide in moose holes. These are caves and are found at the bottom of cliffs. All you've got to do is go to the top of the cliff, and stand there with a big rock in your hands waiting for a moose to come cut, then drop the rock on its head. Of course the trouble with this method, is that you end up with a dead moose at the bottom of the cliff while your truck is very likely parked at the top of the cliff. It's the same in most other moose-hunting methods - you end up having to haul all those hundreds of pounds of meat up a steep hill, down a precipice, or across some vast and oozy muskeg. Rather than chasing your animal all over the territory then, the simplest and best method of getting your winter's meat home is to persuade it to come to you. : Try and lure it to some convenient spot, say right next to your freezer, by some sneaky subterfuge - such as laying a trail of beer nuts for it, or ringing it. up An old hunter's trick you can use to lure moose to you is to try rubbing a moose's shoulder blade against a tree - for some reason moose find this very exciting and come rushing to you from all over, with bunches of flowers and boxes of chocolates in their mouths, ready to do a spot of courting. I tried this once myself,
