1935, which was a Sunday, we are in-
troduced to a very unusual occurrence.
Mrs. Oxley, it will be recalled, was to have
arrived at the house at 7.10 a.m. However,
Dr. Ruxton went to the woman’s house
telling her husband that she would not be
required that morning. Ruxton explained
that his wife and Mary had gone away ona
holiday to Edinburgh and he was taking
the children to Morecambe. He left word
for Mrs. Oxley to come over the following
day. This part was not so strange, but the
fact that the doctor had made the call at
6.30 in the morning surprised both Mrs.
Oxley and her husband. It was well known
that Dr. Ruxton seldom got up before
8 a.m. and usually had his breakfast in his
room. It showed a disproportionate con-
sideration for Mrs. Oxley for he could
have sent her home when she rang the bell
at 7.10 am. This was the first in a series
of strange circumstances.

Next a newsgirl brought the Sunday
paper to the house at No. 2 Dalton Square.
Not receiving any answer to the bell she
left and came back at 9 a.m. To her surprise
instead of a servant answering, Dr. Ruxton
appeared, in a state of agitation. He was
holding his hand close to his body. He told
the girl that his wife and maid were away
in Scotland. Around 10 a.m. a Mrs. Hind-
son brought the milk, and again was greeted
by the doctor. He told her that his wife
and maid were away with the children and
that he had “jammed” his hand. Instead
of allowing Mrs. Hindson to take the milk
to the scullery as usual he insisted that she
leave it on the hall table. At 10.30 a.m.
one Tom Partridge arrived with a copy
of the Sunday Graphic. After knocking
several times and getting no reply he pushed
the paper under. the door.

Around 10.30 a.m. of the same day, Dr.
Ruxton bought two cans of gasoline at a
service station to which he seldom resorted
and then about 11 a.m. called at his usual
garage and got four gallons of gasoline in
the tank of his car. | He was driving the
Hillman Minx which his wife had used at
Blackpool.

Shortly after 11 a.m. a Mrs. Whiteside
brought her small son for a minor operation
On previous appointment. The doctor
opened the door and told Mrs. Whiteside
that he regretted he could not perform the
operation as his wife had gone to Scotland
and “there is just myself and my little maid,
and we are busy taking the carpets up
ready for the decorators in the morning.
Look at my hands, how dirty they are”.
His right hand remained hidden behind the
door.

Around noon, Dr. Ruxton took the
children to a Mrs. Anderson, wife of a
dentist whom he knew quite well. He asked
if she would keep the children for the day.
Again he said that his wife and maid had
gone away for a few days. He also men-
tioned that he had cut his hand in opening
a can of fruit for the children’s breakfast.

Just before 4.30 p.m. he called on one of
his patients, a Mrs. Hampshire, and asked
her to assist him, as the decorators were
coming in the morning, and his wife was
