Have you ever
wondered why UNBC has so
many security officers and
why they are so visible. We

* decided to find out.

To get to the bottom
of this, Karin Fennell went
and talked to Tracey
Thompson. Tracey was an

‘RCMP officer for seven years

and she worked for the
ambulances for four years.

Her background is
as diverse as possible. She
has taught self defense
classes, is trained in crisis
intervention and designs
programs for businesses to
prevent crime.

Thompson is in
charge of the security and
security is a vital component
of this campus.

There is an
incredible amount of
valuable computer and
electronic equipment that
needs to be guarded. High
security areas are frequented
quite regularly.

Visibility is a great
advantage to the security
officers on camps and
especially for the countless

ON SECURITY

newspaper staff who are
constantly asking to be
allowed into their office for
just one minute.

If a person is
walking alone to his or her
car, a security officer will
accompany that person to
their vehicle. As an added
bonus, parking lots are
monitored frequently.

If an item, be it big
or small, has been lost or
found, the security office is

the best place to go and see if -

it has been returned.

Thompson said that
she is concerned about
students feeling comfortable
on campus and hopes that the
high visibility is an added
assurance. She also
encourages students to voice
their concern regarding
security at UNBC so that if
there are any problems, they
can be remedied.

The residences also
benefit from having security.
Security officers will meet

students at their door and ©

escort them to the: Pualdings
or to their vehicles.

All in all, security

will help you out with just
about any problem or
difficulty you have at
campus.
