COQUALEETZA RESIDENTIAL SCHOOL Coqualeetza Principal Honoured An interesting event took place in St. Andrews-Wesley United Church. Vancouver on the evening of April 27th, 1933, when Rev. Principal Raley, F.R.G.S., F.R.S.A.. delivered a most masterful and impressive address to the students of Union Theological College. this being the last convocation to be held in this particular Church. The Senate of Union Theo- logical College availed itself on this occasion of conferring the degree of Doctor of Divinity (honoris causa) on our Principal, Mr. Raley. for faithful and unselfish devotion to the cause of missions. Mr. Raley’s first thought has ever been for the advancement of the native people of B. C. both spiritually and educationally. Mr. E. F. Peake On the evening of the 30th of October. 1932. the staff of Coqualeetza gathered at the home of the Principal to do honor to Mr FF. Peake. who. after four years service found he must return to his home in England. The hours passed in friendly conversation then a fragrant cup of coffee was enjoyed after which Capt. Pirie rose to make some felicitous remarks He assured Mr. Peake that his term of service had been most successful. he had given the best that was in him and his memory and wise teaching would long remain, especially with the younger boys with whom he had most to do Capt Pirie then presented Mr. Peake with a club bag as a token of esteem from the Coqualeetza staff. Mr. Raley also spoke briefly of Mr. Peake’s estimable work. Dr. Cochrane of Toronto visits Coqualeetza On Wednesday afternoon. October 26th, the school was honored by a short visit from Dr. Cochrane. General Secretary of the Home Missions Board of the United Church, accom- panied by Dr. Wilson, Superintendent of Home Missions and Dr. Osterhout, Superintendent of Oriental Missions It was rather a rush visit as our guest arrived at 4:30 and left at 6:30. However, the first item on the program was the planting of a copper beech tree by Dr. Cochrane. in the presence of the student body and a few local guests. Tea was served immediately after, giving the Staff a chance to meet the guests; during these few minutes the students filed into the Assembly Hall. The meeting opened with the singing of “O Canada” and prayer by Dr. Osterhout. Dr. Cochrane was then the recipient of an address from the pupils read by Alice Sepass. The Doctor gave a very bright and interesting address stressing five points: work, dare, think, help others, trust in God Dr. Wilson presented to the audience his special appeal for the M. & M. offering for the month of November. Rey. Dr. White pronounced the benediction; Rev. S. Cook and Rey. E. Manuel were also present on the platform. After the meeting the guest of honor was conducted through the building by Principal Raley and the Lady Superintendent, Miss E. MacKay. and then after a hurried dinner with Principal and Mrs. Raley, the party left for Mission City to again address an audience at 8:00 p.m. Such visits are productive of excellent results. The “Chiefs of the Church” are always welcome visitors in our education institutions.
