H. Raley entered into the work of the Christian ministry in the Bay of Quinte Conference of the former Methodist Church in 1894, where he spent nine years. In 1890 he married Miss Maude Giles, daughter of Dr. J. G. Giles, a physician of Brockville. In 1893 Dr. Raley transferred to British Columbia and was stationed at Kitamaat, then one of the most isolated villages on the coast. Mail was recevied only once every two months and besides the ministers wife, only one other white woman, the teacher, was. within miles. During their first year they started the Boys’ and Girls’ Home. In 1906 Dr. and Mrs. Raley removed to Port Simpson where they spent eight years, coming to Coqualeetza in 1914, since which time their work is known and appreciated by the entire community. Dr. Raley has gathered one of the finest collections of Indian curios in private hands in Canada, and is an acknowledged authortiy on folk lore and legends of the Indian people of the north. It is the hope of his many friends that in the next few years he will have time to arrange his material so that it may be preserved for all time. He has made a special study of native handicraft and some of the work at Coqualeetza along this line is surprisingly well done. Dr. Raley believes that the encouragement of native craft work would ensure a happy solution to the Indian economic problem. During his long ministry, Dr. Raley has been honored with many posts of responsibility and distinction. For years he was chairman of the Indian district, and in 1908 was elected president of the conferencé. In recent years he had conferred on him the degree of Doctor of Divinity by Union Theological College and he has also been honored with fellowships in the Royal Geographical Society and in the Roya Society of Arts. Mrs. Raley for nine years occupied the position of regent, Chilliwack Municipal Chapter 1.0.D.E., is a member of the Henry Tyron Chapter 1.0.D.E.: of the Canadian Club, and the W.M.S. of Carman Church, Sardis. In all of these organizations she will be greatly missed. Miss Price, their daughter, has also been an invaluable member of the Canadian Club executive, and of other bodies as well as assisting in a practical way the work of the school. As there had been felt the need of a Chapel, Principal Raley opened a Savings Account in the Bank of Toronto, Vancouver, No. 2245, for that purpose, with an objective of $10,000.00. The fund now stands at $1,745.00. We urgently appeal to the Alumni Associations to make this cause an objective. Twenty-one
