12 Paciric Great Eastern Ratnway BE tt. Clinton and Tributary District. Around the historic town of Clinton most of the available land is surveyed and taken up. There are some fine old farms and some magnifi- cent crops grown in this vicinity, and the town is the administrative centre for the Cariboo District. South of Clinton Valley and on the rolling hill west of Bonaparte River much good range is found. The Bonaparte drains a deep valley, with occasional benches across the southerly plateau. The surveys shown on pre-emptors’ maps practically indicate the total area suitable for settle- ment: It is essentially a stock-raising district, but surveyors consider that market-gardening and fruit-raising could be successfully carried on here in limited areas. Hay, alfalfa, and some oats are grown on some of the benches where irrigation is available, and wild hay is cut on the plateau. A road from Clinton runs up the Bonaparte to Bonaparte Forks, where there is a small settlement and some land under cultivation. From 7 to 21 miles due north of Clinton a large area has been surveyed in what is known ‘| locally as the Bea- : ver Dam section, traversed by the roads from Clinton and 70-Mile to con- nect with the Chil- cotin and northern roads, and aggre- gating about 160,- ae oe a = rere SGC CNG Taras : Sa . ft A CARIBOO FARM-HOUSE. 000 acres. Much open pasture and good meadow land is a feature. The pine and poplar forest is open and the surface fairly level. The Fertile Bonaparte Valley Region. “ Seventy-mile,” or Boyd’s, is a road-house and ranch on Cariboo Road where the railway crosses. It is the post-office for a stock-raising centre. A road from 70-Mile travels 23 miles to North Bonaparte Post- office, a cattle-raising area with a small settlement. This road continues to Roe Lake, a distance of 38 miles. The Currie Road runs from 70-Mile and branches to the forks of North and South Bonaparte, where there is a small stock-raising settlement. Lying due south of Currie Road towards Bonaparte River is a good- sized area of land, unmapped and only partially explored.
