In ez between the two releases, = Our Lady Peace scarcely took a break. Two Canadian = USA, as well as appearances at events including the Much Music Video Awards and Junos, Webchats and...READING. Arguably, if it wasn’t for the reading, Spiritual Machines wouldn’t exist. Mike originally began reading Ray Kurzweil’s book “The Age of Spiritual Machines - When Computers Exceed Human Intelligence,” a book which describes “a world where the line between humanity and technology fades, and the computer ulti- mately becomes our teacher, companion and lover in a blur of man meets machine.” Mike’s energy eventually led to Raine’s interest in the book and the rest is history, with Jeremy and Duncan absorb- ing the concepts of Kurzweil vicariously through _ their bandmates. Spiritual Machines evidents a number of concepts found in Kurzweil’s theories. Raine himself explains, “Lyrically, this album is about finding the spirituality within ourselves...the lyrics focus upon how people tend to treat each other as machines in our day-to-day life.” Kurzweil undoubtedly lit the creative spark for Spiritual Machines (he even reads from his book in a few tracks), but don’t let the potential deepness of the lyrics deter you from thinking that this album is different from previ- ous Our Lady Peace albums. The token melancholy trade- mark of Our Lady Peace is still present with the careful and confined presence of all the original characteristics of Our Lady Peace. This is an album for former Our Lady Peace lovers and for anyone who is still left in the category of those who haven't listened yet.
